With free agency right around the corner and the NFL Draft looming, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Wednesday that they are releasing veteran wide receiver Christian Kirk in a bid to save money.
Cutting the seven-year pro helps Jacksonville save $10.7 million against the cap, hence freeing up room for a potential free agent signing under first-year head coach Liam Coen.
Kirk’s injury history played a role in his release, but his services could come cheap on the open market if a receiver-needy team like the Texans comes knocking.
With just over $14 million of cap space, Houston may not be able to afford bigger names like Davante Adams this offseason, but that isn’t to say a deal for Kirk is off the table as General Manager Nick Caserio plans for a future that may not include fellow free agent, Stefon Diggs.
With Tank Dell also set to miss the start of the year after undergoing multiple surgeries on his left knee, a one or two-year ‘prove it’ deal with Kirk would make sense for both sides.
After playing only eight games last year due to injury, Kirk will be eager to prove that there is plenty left in the tank after once being a feared slot man known for his superior route running, while the Texans could use a receiver to pair with Nico Collins.
Kirk’s best season came in 2022 when he reeled in 84 catches for over 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns, helping guide the Jags as far as the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
With several players around the league opting to sign with division rivals in recent years, a move for Kirk could help keep the Texans remain competitive in the AFC as they battle tight financial constraints moving forward.
