The New York Yankees could be on the hunt for starting pitchers near the trade deadline. They could target a cheaper rental to help patch up their starting rotation.
The Yankees will surely be linked to Sandy Alcántara and Pablo López, who both could be traded and have multiple years of club control. However, Erick Fedde might make more sense for the Yankees, according to ClutchPoints' Christopher Hennessy. Fedde will be a free agent after the season.
"Fedde is slumping out of the gates, with a 1-3 record and 4.68 ERA through six starts," wrote Hennessy. "Two bad starts are inflating those numbers and could get watered down with more great starts. The Cardinals should not be asking for much for the 32-year-old starter, which is good for the Yankees. And he only makes $7.5 against the luxury tax for this season, and his contract expires in the winter."
The Yankees are currently leaning heavily on Max Fried. They lost Gerrit Cole for the season this spring and Luis Gil is still on the injured list. Carlos Carrasco and Will Warren have not looked like reliable starters. Marcus Stroman is on the injured list, and his time with the Yankees could be coming to an end.
Fedde had a 3.30 ERA last season after pitching in Korea in 2023. He made 31 starts between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox.

Fedde is not a flashy name, but he could get the job done for the Yankees. Next season, the Yankees will expect Cole back and could re-sign Fedde if they like what they see. However, the fact that he will be a free agent after the year could work out well for the Yankees.
