The hiring of a new coach will highlight the Chicago Bears' offseason. While they could go the traditional route and hire a candidate, what if they traded for a new coach?
The Bears have a young quarterback and are in need of a coach who can oversee his development while also building a culture. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has consistently had his team competing for the playoffs but has not seemed to figure out their quarterback situation since Ben Roethlisberger retired. Sports Illustrated's Alan Goldsher proposed a trade that brings Tomlin to the Windy City. The Bears would be parting ways with a third-round pick for Tomlin in his proposal.
"Tomlin is a culture-builder, he has a career winning percentage of .630, and he’s the proud owner of a shiny Super Bowl ring. The 52-year-old's last few years, however, have been a tad wobbly—he hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016—so Pittsburgh ownership might be happy to let him go for a Day Two pick," wrote Goldsher
Tomlin has not taken the Steelers to the Super Bowl since the 2010 season. He has a 183-107-2 record as a head coach. The Bears need to nail their head coach hire to escape the cycle of firing head coaches and failing their young quarterback. Caleb Williams showed promise in his first year, and Tomlin could establish a winning culture.
The Bears have talented young players across the board and need strong leadership. In a division with Dan Campbell, Matt LaFleur and Kevin O'Connell the Bears need a great head coach.
