The New England Patriots moved on from Bill Belichick after the 2023 season. Now he is the head coach at the University of North Carolina and opened up about his departure from the Patriots.
During an interview with CBS' Tony Dokoupil, Belichick was asked about the end of his tenure with the Patriots and his reaction to Robert Kraft's firing. Belichick answered by correcting Dokoupil and saying that it was a mutual decision for him to leave New England. However, Dokoupil noted that Kraft called it a firing.
"It was a mutual decision," Belicheck reassured Doukoupil.
Despite Dokoupil telling Belichick that Kraft said he fired him, Belichick remained adamant that the decision was mutual. Belichick reportedly had interest from other teams in 2024, but he ended up not coaching at all. He took on a media role, but has returned to coaching.
Belichick was named the head coach at UNC earlier this year and seems excited to take on the new opportunity. Regardless of how his time in New England ended, he left his mark on both Patriots and NFL history. He won six Super Bowls as a head coach and was named Coach of the Year three times by the Associated Press.

All six of his Super Bowls came with Tom Brady as his quarterback. Both were key in building one of the greatest dynasties in league history. Belichick's last Super Bowl win came in 2018 against the Los Angeles Rams.
