After trading back 10 spots with the Los Angeles Rams, the Indianapolis Colts started Day 3 of the NFL draft, selecting Iowa State offensive tackle Jalen Travis as the No. 127 overall pick in the fourth round.
How does that impact the offensive tackle depth chart?
The first question after the Colts took Travis is, what does that mean for Matt Goncalves? Last month, after Will Fries signed with the Minnesota Vikings, there was speculation that Goncalves would fill the voided right guard spot.
When speaking with the media last month, Steichen spoke on the topic.
“We’ve got to have flexibility inside and outside,” Steichen said. “Matt’s had the one single snap or whatever it was inside at guard, but he’s good at tackle. We’ll explore those options.”
With the pick of Travis, the points to the sign that Indianapolis is considering having Goncalves take over the starting right guard spot over having him as their swing tackle.
Which would lead to a competition in training camp for the swing tackle between Travis and third-year tackle Blake Freeland. Or the focus could be having either player focus on being the backup left tackle and backup right tackle if neither seizes the opportunity to win the swing tackle job.
Jack Wilson and Luke Tenuta are also on the roster but are practice-squad candidates unless either can overcome Travis or Freeland in the preseason. Chris Ballard kept just four tackles after last year’s 53-man cut deadline, which included Goncalves, but I am presuming he is currently penciled in as the starting right guard.
