Colorado Buffaloes football legend Shedeur Sanders wasn’t selected during the 2025 NFL draft’s first three rounds. Could that mean his professional ambitions are set to be put on hold?
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes the “Grown QB” should consider it. Specifically, Florio thinks Sanders should hit the transfer portal and prove he can be a star under a head coach who isn’t his father, Deion.
“Here’s another twist that he should consider. Don’t go back to Colorado. His 2026 draft stock could be enhanced by finding a new team, and by proving that he can play at a high level away from his father/coach, Deion,” Florio wrote.
“It’s an idea. A possibility. A way to make chicken salad. And a path toward making more money this year, with a chance to enter the NFL in a better draft position next year.”
The Athletic’s Dan Duggan believes Shedeur may get a best-case scenario in the NFL: backing up a top quarterback on a contender.
“This is the other element at play in such a steep slide. He was almost more likely to be a first-round pick than a third-round pick. Now, he’ll get picked at some point today because the value will be impossible to ignore. But I bet it’ll be a team with a top QB so there is no drama about him starting,” Duggan wrote.
“Could be a smart investment for a team like that to take him as a trade asset in a year if he performs well in the preseason.”
With his jersey number retired at CU, Shedeur is not returning to college football. Playing for a different program is a non-starter.
