The Philadelphia Eagles continue to stockpile talent on the defensive side of the football in the 2025 NFL Draft.
That’s excellent news for tight end Dallas Goedert and his uncertain future with the reigning Super Bowl champs.
If the Eagles were going to target one of the top tight end prospects in this year’s deep draft class, Day 2 was the time to do it. Philly had been linked to intriguing prospects like LSU’s Mason Taylor by draft guru Todd McShay, but Taylor wound up going off the board at pick No. 42 overall to the New York Jets, and a mini-run on tight ends soon followed.

The Los Angeles Rams took Oregon’s Terrance Ferguson with pick No. 46, and the Seattle Seahawks snagged Miami’s Elijah Arroyo at No. 50. The Eagles were on the clock at No. 64 overall, and Bowling Green’s Harold Fannin Jr. — the FBS-record-breaking product of former BG coach Scot Loeffler, who’s now on the Eagles’ coaching staff — was still available.
Philly went with Texas Longhorns safety Andrew Mukuba at that spot instead, and with Fannin going off the board early in Round 3, the Eagles bailed on making a third-round selection altogether via a pair of trades.
The real winner here is Goedert, as the Eagles won’t be finding a suitable replacement for their longtime starting tight end on Day 3 of the draft. A trade for a younger tight end is always possible — Eagles insider Anthony DiBona floated former Bears starter Cole Kmet as an interesting option — but with how this has played out, Goedert gained some leverage in his hopes for a contract extension.

Goedert’s entering his age-30 season and has no guaranteed money remaining on his current deal. He’s due for an $11.7 million cap hit this season, and that number could be reduced via a short-term extension.
The trade rumors have been swirling over the past month, and Eagles’ brass has been cryptic on the situation with a bunch of non-answers. But Goedert’s chances of sticking with the Eagles in 2025 (and potentially beyond) increased after the first three-plus rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft.
