The Dallas Mavericks' goal is to get back to the NBA Finals for a second straight season. They might need to add some pieces to accomplish that goal.
Bleacher Report makes a case that the Mavs should go after John Collins of the Utah Jazz.
The 6-foot-9 forward is averaging 17.8 points on 53.7% shooting, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists this season.
Collins' ability to knock down the three-pointer and fill the lane would make him a very strong fit next to Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving. As Dončić demonstrated during last year's playoff run, he thrives with having bigs who can roll hard to the rim and go up high to finish his lobs.
Collins will give the Mavs exactly that, as he had a ton of success during his time with the Atlanta Hawks and Trae Young, providing him a lot of clean looks at the rim and behind the arc.
If the Mavs were to trade for him, though, they should be ready to invest in him long-term since he has a player option for next season.
The Wake Forest product is set to make $26.5 million next season if he opts in. Given the numbers he's producing this season, it's unlikely he'd opt in, especially if he finishes the season strong with Utah or helps a championship-contending team go deep into the playoffs.
For all the pros of trading for Collins, there are some cons as well. Collins at his price tag might not be that much of an upgrade over P.J. Washington, who makes over $10 million less than the Jazz forward.
It will also take the Mavs parting with another piece, perhaps longtime fan favorite Maxi Kleber or Daniel Gafford. Dallas may also prefer to hold onto their draft picks for another potential deal.
