The United States women’s basketball team won its 60th consecutive Olympic game on Friday, rendering arguably the toughest team it has faced in this tournament helpless. Team USA routed Australia 85-64, holding the Opals to 36 percent shooting, and now aims to win an eighth consecutive gold medal by defeating France in Paris in the final athletic competition of the 2024 games (9:30 a.m. ET, NBC).

Oddsmakers at top online sportsbooks price the USA as a large betting favorite over the French, who aim for their first gold medal in women’s basketball, bolstered by a homecourt edge that helped it reach its second-ever championship game at the Olympics.

France survived neighbor Belgium 81-75, prevailing in overtime after Emma Meesseman’s late heroics tied a game that looked wrapped up. French star wing Gabby Williams scored the first five points of the extra session and made the biggest basket on a layup with 39 seconds left after the Belgians drew back within a point.

The U.S. defeated France in the 2012 final, 86-50 in London, but the only player on either roster who is back a dozen years later is 43-year-old American guard Diana Taurasi, who looks to make history by winning a sixth consecutive gold in a team sport.

In these nations' most recent meeting, in group play at the Tokyo Olympics in ‘21, France led the Americans 22-19 after a quarter but fell 93-82. Forwards A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart combined for 39 points and 14 rebounds.

USA betting news and analysis

Wilson led the way against Australia by registering four first-half blocks and finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds in another exceptional performance. Stewart has scored in double-figures every game and led Team USA in the semifinal with 16 points, adding six boards and five assists.

Jackie Young continued emerging as the top guard for the U.S. at this event, scoring 14 on Friday and matching Las Vegas Aces teammate Chelsea Gray and Stewart with a team-best five assists. Kahleah Copper led all reserves with 11 points.

The Americans have averaged 89.8 points while surrendering 71.2 over their five Olympic wins. They have won each of their contests by 13 or more points.

Coach Cheryl Reeve’s team has excelled defensively and built up most of its edge in the paint and on the glass. The U.S. hasn’t shot the ball well, but went 7-for-17 from 3-point range in the semifinals and has been more effective from beyond the arc in the knockout stages.

France betting news and analysis

France is the deepest team the U.S. will run into on their gold medal quest. Williams is a Nevada native who won two national titles at UConn, played in the WNBA for five seasons and was named 2022 Euroleague Final Four MVP. The No. 4 overall pick in ‘18, Williams has been playing with ASVEL in the French LFB.

Williams is joined as a key catalyst by top reserve Marine Johannes, a skilled guard who played for the New York Liberty last season but has opted to play in her home country to better prepare for these games.

Marieme Badiane, a 6-foot-3 center, has led the team in boards in four of five games, just won a Euroleague title with BLMA and joins Williams at Turkiye's Fenerbahce next season.

Valeriane Ayayi starts alongside Williams on the wing, while veteran guard Romane Bernies has started ahead of Johannes at the point. Forward Janelle Salaun, whose kid brother Tidjane was selected No. 6 overall by the Hornets in June’s draft, and center Iliana Rupert, whose younger brother Rayan just completed his rookie season with the Trail Blazers, also play major roles.

The French have the second-best point differential at these games, averaging 77.4 points while surrendering 66.6. They lost to Australia in their final preliminary round game but still won Group B.

USA vs. France prediction: Coming up Aces in Paris

Expect to see all four Las Vegas players -- Wilson, Gray, Young and Kelsey Plum -- play large roles next to starters Stewart and Napheesa Collier. How close this game ends up depends on how well the Americans shoot from the perimeter, but sound defense and solid work on the boards should produce an eighth straight gold medal in a lower-scoring game than expected.
