Cubs-Diamondbacks get rain delay update amid tricky schedule situation image

The tarp is on the Wrigley Field infield.

The Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks will not be starting on time.

The game was supposed to start at 2:20 p.m. ET, 1:20 Central.

Instead, rain has kept the game from getting underway.

Sunday's forecast called for scattered showers and the occasional thunderstorm. Rain is expected into the early evening.

As of the scheduled first pitch time, the new first pitch is believed to be targeted for 3 p.m. ET, 2 p.m. Central.

It's a tricky situation, because the Cubs and Diamondbacks aren't slated to play again this season.

They do both have off days on Monday. Arizona is slated to fly home and begin a homestand on Tuesday, while the Cubs play a two-game series at Wrigley beginning Tuesday against the Dodgers.

Delaying the game entirely until Monday would force Arizona to make its flight back to Phoenix 24 hours later than hoped.

This is supposed to be the series finale to a matchup that began Friday with an absurd 13-11 Cubs win that featured 16 runs just in the eighth inning.

Chicago won the Saturday matchup, as well, thanks to back-to-back homers from Seiya Suzuki and Michael Busch.
