It wasn’t exactly pretty, but it didn’t need to be as a rotated Barcelona side handled La Liga basement-dwellers Valladolid by a 2-1 score to open up a significant gap atop the table and survive their weekend league test before Tuesday’s huge Champions League semifinal second leg.

Valladolid went ahead early as they looked dangerous on the counter, with Ivan Sanchez’s deflected goal finding the back of the net.

Barcelona, largely composed of backups and young players as Hansi Flick prioritized the upcoming Champions League game, struggled to handle the Valladolid counter-attack throughout the first half, especially out wide.

Young debutant Dani Rodriguez was strong in the first half-hour of his debut for Barcelona, but was forced off with a nasty shoulder injury, which brought Lamine Yamal into the match earlier than anticipated. With Raphinha then introduced at halftime, Barcelona were more full-strength up front and primed for the comeback.

Raphinha added to his Ballon d’Or resume with the equalizer shortly after the break, and minutes later Fermin Lopez snatched the winner.

From there, Barcelona hung on amidst a spirited Valladolid fight, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen returning from his ACL injury to make a number of quality saves. Raphinha twice came close to adding to the Barcelona lead with free-kicks, but just missed both times.

Barcelona move seven points clear at the top of the table with a win, as second-placed Real Madrid will host Celta Vigo on Sunday looking to respond. They will now set their sights on the European tie, which will come quickly in just three days on the road in Italy.

Valladolid vs. Barcelona live updates, highlights from La Liga match

FULLTIME: Valladolid 1-2 Barcelona

It wasn't exactly vintage Barcelona, but Hansi Flick's rotated side comes away with the win on the road, by a 2-1 score. Raphinha and Fermin Lopez were the goal scores, moving Barcelona seven points clear at the top of the table. An injury to Gavi is a blow, but otherwise Barcelona make it out unscathed on the fitness front.

90+4 min: Chance, Barcelona! Raphinha whips another free-kick just shy of the right post, as it whizzes by the woodwork past a diving Andre Ferreira! That's the final kick of the game, as the referee blows his whistle.

90th min: A yellow card is shown to recent substitute Mario Martin for fouling Dani Olmo right outside the top of the penalty area, clipping the Barcelona playmaker from behind as he chased a poor first touch. Raphinha takes the free-kick and comes close to pocketing it in the top corner but it sails just wide of the frame.

Five minutes of added time are shown.

84th min: Ronald Araujo is shown a yellow card for wrestling Juanmi Latasa to the ground right on the center circle as Valladolid tried to counter.

80th min: Chance, Barcelona! LAMINE YAMAL'S SHOT IS CLEARED OFF THE LINE! The youngster is there to tap it in at the far post from a floated cross over the Valladolid back line, but it's denied by a defender who arrives to poke it away!

78th min: Gavi, who has had muscle injury issues all season that have kept him from being fully fit, is struggling with a hamstring problem in his right leg. He's trying to work it out while seated on the ground, but Eric Garcia will come on to replace him as Hansi Flick takes no chances.

It's a real shame for the young midfielder, as he is brilliant at his best but has been unable to get fully fit all year long.

74th min: Chance, Valladolid! Barcelona are beaten down the left wing yet again on the counter, and Valladolid swing the ball around to the right where Juanmi Latasa is free on goal, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen makes the save from a somewhat tight angle!

69th min: Chance, Barcelona! HECTOR FORT STRIKES THE POST! Brilliant work from Lamine Yamal on the backheel threads in the Barcelona full-back, who then dazzles on the ball with a number of cutbacks to create room for the shot. He cuts the ball past the goalkeeper, but unluckily strikes the inside of the far post and sees the ball cannon back out, right into the waiting arms of the Andre Ferreira.

A few moments later, Valladolid make another double change as Florian Grillitsch comes on for Ivan Sanchez, while Chuki replaces Selim Amallah.

62nd min: Shortly after the goal, Hansi Flick brings Dani Olmo on for a 30-minute appearance, replacing Pau Victor.

Valladolid respond with their first two changes of the game, as Anuar is replaced by Amath Ndiaye, and Mamadou Sylla is sat for Juanmi Latasa. Both withdrawn players have been yellow carded and thus are being protected.

60th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! Six minutes after Raphinha brought Barcelona back level, Fermin Lopez gives them the lead!!! A turnaround in a flash!

The visitors cycle it around from right to left, and then it's ALL too easy as Gerard Martin's sliced cross from the left finds a completely unmarked Lopez at the top of the penalty area. He steps into the shot and rifles the ball low between two defenders and past Andre Ferreira! An awful goal for Valladolid to concede, as there's no reason such a simple move should have seen Fermin so unmarked!

54th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! RAPHINHA HAS BROUGHT BARCELONA LEVEL! A long Lamine Yamal delivery from deep is over the head of Pau Victor in front of goal, but it serves to draw the goalkeeper out of his net! As Andre Ferreira punches it away, it falls to Raphinha who cuts to his right and scythes a shot past a recovering Ferreira and into the net!

Watch in USA:

53rd min: Chance, Barcelona! Raphinha almost levels the score with a sensational free-kick from a very tight angle on the right, but Andre Ferreira makes a smart save tipping it over the bar!

It's been all Barcelona so far in this second half, as Valladolid have had no counter-attack impetus and have been happy to sit back and absorb pressure.

2nd half kickoff: The teams are back out on the pitch and the game is once again under way! Hansi Flick has made two substitutions at the break, first to bring Raphinha on to help in the comeback, replacing Ansu Fati. Second, he rests Pedri by rotating him with Frenkie de Jong.

HALFTIME: Valladolid 1-0 Barcelona

An utterly superb performance from Valladolid in that first half, as they go into the break with a lead! They snatched a fluky but deserved goal early on, and have remained exceedingly dangerous countering the high Barcelona line, especially out wide.

The rotated Barcelona squad has done well to create a few good chances, but Andre Ferreira has been up to the task when required, and the finishing hasn't exactly been on point either. Dani Rodriguez's debut was cruelly cut short by a nasty looking injury, but it also means Lamine Yamal is on to help rescue Barcelona from what would be a severe disappointment.

44th min: Chance, Barcelona! Lamine Yamal gets two cracks on goal shortly after coming on, but he sees the first one blocked and fires the follow-up wide! He didn't get much of a warmup, so he could be a bit rusty!

42nd min: Valladolid continue to look incredibly dangerous on the counter, as the Barcelona full-backs are being shredded out wide. Jules Kounde's injury for Barcelona looks a REAL threat to their Champions League hopes...

37th min: Anuar Tuhami is booked for fouling Gerard Martin, flying in late on the Barcelona full-back and sending him toppling over.

35th min: There's a major injury issue for Barcelona, with the young Daniel Rodriguez being wrapped up by the medical staff after what looks like a potentially serious shoulder injury. Lamine Yamal readies on the touchline for a longer cameo than he probably anticipated. What a shame, as it was the youngster's debut for the senior side.

30th min: Chance, Barcelona! Ansu Fati creates his own chance and forces a save from Ferreira!

26th min: Barcelona have created very little tonight in front of goal despite all their possession, while Valladolid have been exceptional on the counter.

15th min: Chance, Barcelona! PAU VICTOR'S HEADER IS SAVED! A brilliant stop by Andre Ferreira who tips the header over the crossbar! Victor had risen very high to meet a cross from deep right on the doorstep of goal!

11th min: Chance, Valladolid! GREAT SAVE!!!! Raul Moro gets past the Barcelona high line and is clean through on goal, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen comes off his line to close down the chance and make the save! A better finish would have beaten the goalkeeper but instead Valladolid remain just a goal to the good!

8th min: Ronaldo Araujo is the first into the referee's book for dissent, and shortly after Mamadou Sylla is shown a yellow card for toppling Pedri from behind with a late clip of his heels, that's a naughty one.

6th min: GOAL! VALLADOLID! The La Liga leaders are stunned as Marc-Andre ter Stegen is beaten just six minutes into the game! It's a total fluke of a goal from Ivan Sanchez, who tries to cross it from the right and the ball deflects off Andreas Christensen from a ridiculous angle, but manages to pop off the ground and perfectly over the top of the Barcelona goalkeeper into the net!

Watch in UK:

Kickoff: They're under way in Castille and Leon! Barcelona can take a commanding lead in the La Liga title race with a win today and put more pressure on Real Madrid.

Valladolid vs. Barcelona: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: The home fans are protesting the ownership of Ronaldo Nazario, having printed fake €500 notes and passed them around. The Brazilian superstar has been owner since 2018, seeing the club promoted last season from the second tier, a year after they were relegated from La Liga the season before. They've begun a yo-yo club.

30 mins to kickoff: With five matches left, Real Madrid's maximum remaining points are 87, meaning Barcelona have a ways to go before they can confirm the La Liga title. The race is probably closer than it feels in actuality, since Real Madrid are in quite a bit of turmoil and look to be struggling to gain points on a regular basis.

Only a matter of time, especially if Barcelona get the business done today...

45 mins to kickoff: Thanks to Hansi Flick's full rotation, there's an unfamiliar face in the Barcelona lineup today. 19-year-old La Masia product Dani Rodriguez starts on the wing. He's a regular in the Spain U-19 side, first developing in the Real Sociedad academy before joining Barcelona in 2020.

1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in! For Barcelona, not only does Marc-Andre ter Stegen return, but so does Andreas Christensen, who has been missing with a number of injury setbacks over the last few months.

It's near total rotation for Hansi Flick, who swaps out nearly every single regular starter except Pedri in midfield.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: It has been revealed on Barcelona's social media account that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has returned to the squad and will likely start, as the photo shows his kit with the captain's armband.

Despite the fact that ter Stegen has been training for weeks after his return from a torn ACL, it was thought the regular Barcelona goalkeeper would not return at any point this season. The reports claimed that Hansi Flick did not want to upset the squad as Wojciech Szczesny had come out of retirement to cover, and because ter Stegen could not rejoin the Champions League roster without Szczesny dropping out completely, it wasn't worth messing with things further.

Yet today, ter Stegen returns to give Szczesny a rest between Champions League semifinals against the league's bottom side.

2 hours to kickoff: Welcome to coverage of Valladolid vs. Barcelona from The Sporting News! Barcelona will surely have one eye on Tuesday's Champions League meeting with Inter, so how aggressively will Hansi Flick play this game knowing any bigger of a gap at the top of the league table all but ensures them the La Liga title?

Valladolid vs. Barcelona lineups, team news

Valladolid captain Javi Sanchez picked up a hamstring injury eight minutes into their recent 5-1 defeat at Real Betis, and his status for this match is uncertain, but it likely leaves him on the sidelines. His replacement on the day, Ghana international Joseph Aidoo, interestingly does not appear in the squad whatsoever, as Cenk Ozkacar is the one to step in.

Brazilian left-back Henrique Silva is unlikely to participate, as the 31-year-old was only just signed as a free agent and is still working to gain fitness. Goalkeeper Karl Hein, on loan from Arsenal, is back on the bench after missing time with a shoulder injury.

Valladolid starting lineup (4-1-4-1): Ferreira (GK) — Candela, Comert, Ozkacar, Aznou — Juric —Anuar, I. Sanchez, Amallah, Moro — Sylla.

Valladolid subs: Hein (GK), D. Torres, Parente, L. Perez, Chuki, Grillitsch, Martin, Nikitscher, Ndiaye, Machis, Latasa, de Sousa.

Despite reports that Marc-Andre ter Stegen would not return this season, he indeed is back with the team for the first time since his torn ACL early in the campaign.

An injury to Barcelona's minutes leader Jules Kounde in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal presents an enormous problem for Hansi Flick. Along with Alejandro Balde also sidelined by injury, Barcelona finished the first leg against Inter on Wednesday with natural center-backs Eric Garcia and Inigo Martinez in the two full-back positions.

Balde has returned to training, and but he cannot pass fit to make the bench today, meaning he is unlikely to be ready for a starting role on Tuesday. That means Flick must find two starting full-backs, with Gerard Martin and Hector Fort filling in.

Robert Lewandowski remains out injured, targeting next weekend's Clasico as his potential return, meaning Ferran Torres continues up front, although it's possible Pau Victor starts this weekend to give Torres a break. Gavi may get a rare start here, while Andreas ChristensenRonald AraujoFermin Lopez, and Ansu Fati are all rotated in as well.

Barcelona starting lineup (4-2-3-1): ter Stegen (GK) — Fort, Araujo, Christensen, G. Martin — Gavi, Pedri — D. Rodriguez, F. Lopez, Fati — Victor.

Barcelona subs: Szczesny (GK), Pena (GK), E. Garcia, I. Martinez, Farre, Cubarsi, de Jong, Olmo, Darvich, F. Torres, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha.
