The United States women's soccer team knew it would see a tough test against Japan, and the Americans got more than they bargained for. The overtime heroics of a beautiful left-footed finish from Trinity Rodman lifted the USWNT to the 2024 Olympic semifinal. In the semi today, the USA sees a familiar foe in Germany, who they have already beaten once in the Olympics, 4-1.

The German women's team is hoping for a different result. They have been playing better ever since they were beaten down by the USWNT in their second Olympic match. They gained confidence by crushing Zambia 4-1, then followed with an impressive defensive performance, shutting out Canada and beating them in penalty kicks to set up the rematch in the Olympic semifinal with the United States.

The USA women's team is the favorite over Germany in Tuesday's game, according to odds at top online sportsbooks.

USWNT betting news and analysis

The USWNT came into the Paris Games as the favorite to win the whole thing, and going undefeated and winning each game has only bettered its odds. Right now, BetMGM has the United States with +138 odds to win the gold medal.

After the young offense looked excellent in group play, the first knockout round game saw the forwards go silent for 90+ minutes. It took overtime before the first and only goal of the match was score, off the foot of Rodman, showing she has some of that grit her dad was known for. The USWNT can't afford to wait for overtime to score in the semis, because the Germans have proven they are dangerous offensively.

This rematch is a huge test for Emma Hayes and her coaching staff. Much of this contest could come down to coaching, strategy and adjustments, as these two teams played just nine days ago.

Germany betting news and analysis

Can the German women get a better result than the first time they played the United States when they were crushed 4-1? The answer is yes, they absolutely can, but a better result still may not get them a win. They will have to find some of the offense they had against Zambia and Australia, better than the efforts that produced only one total goal against the United States and Canada.

The good news is that after allowing four goals in the first match, the German defense has looked much stronger, allowing only one goal in its past two matches. If the Germans can find a few goals of their own while displaying better defense, they have the talent to pull off the upset against the USWNT.

USA vs. Germany prediction: Stars & Stripes to advance to women's soccer final at Paris Games

The U.S women have proven they match up well with Germany and have confidence heading into the semifinal. Don't expect them to win the three goals again, but rather in a close match. The United States will carry a one-goal lead into the second half and score a late goal to win by two, earning a spot in the gold medal match.
