With their final pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos finally selected a tight end but like most of the team's picks in this draft, it was not a player anyone would expect.
Caleb Lohner, who played both basketball and football at the University of Utah, was the team's choice with the No. 241 pick of the draft.
Lohner is a big target at 6-foot-8 but he's known more for being a basketball player for the Utes. He played at BYU and Baylor before transferring to Utah, appearing in 153 college basketball games and averaging 4.5 points over his career. As a football player, he caught just four passes in his career.
The Broncos are taking a shot on his size and athletic ability, looking for a player who could become an option in the red zone down the road. Of course, basketball players becoming NFL tight ends is not unheard of, but you probably won't see one have the level of success that Antonio Gates achieved ever again.
Late-round picks are considered dart throws and there probably won't be a bigger dart throw in this entire draft than this one, but if nothing else, it will be exciting to see if Lohner can develop into anything the team can use in the future. Sean Payton had a basketball player become a tight end with Jimmy Graham in New Orleans, so he's done it before. However, Lohner will be a massive longshot to make the roster.
