Going from college football to the NFL comes with a lot of change. Players no longer have the academic side of being a student-athlete, and their job becomes the game of football. For Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, any new team he has joined in the past four years has had a common factor: the head coach. 

Sanders spent his entire collegiate career playing for his dad Deion. First, it was at Jackson State, then at Colorado. Unless something radical happens before the fall, Shedeur will head to the NFL without his father. That means that the quarterback will have to answer to someone else in the offense for the first time since high school. And even in high school, his father was the offensive coordinator.

Shedeur Sanders coach history, explained

Sanders was born in Tyler, Texas, in 2002. The quarterback went to Trinity Christian High School in Cedar, Texas. His father, Deion, had been the head coach at Triple A Academy in 2015 and 2016, but he left to become the offensive coordinator for Shedeur at Trinity Christian in 2017. Before having his dad as a head coach, Shedeur had three different head coaches in high school. 

Sanders initially committed to play college football at Florida Atlantic. He de-committed and then committed to Jackson State once his father became the head coach at the HBCU. Sanders spent two seasons playing there, but he transferred to Colorado in 2023 when his dad became the Buffaloes' new head coach. There had been rumblings that Deion would head to the NFL if that team drafted his son, but he signed an extension to stay at Colorado. So, not only for the first time in four years will Shedeur not have his father as his coach, but Deion won't have his son as his starting quarterback.
