The Dallas Cowboys assembled a solid 2025 NFL Draft class, primarily focused on strengthening both the offensive and defensive units up front. Picks like Alabama’s Tyler Booker and Oregon’s Ajani Cornelius immediately give quarterback Dak Prescott so more needed protection as he recovers from a torn hamstring.

The Cowboys also added to their backfield with a few late-round running back selections who can be immediate contributors. However, the one area the front office did not address in the draft, which is a current weakness on this roster, is the wide receiver core. This unit is still painfully thin outside of All-Pro wideout CeeDee Lamb.

Lorenzo Reyna, an Associate Editor for ClutchPoints, therefore explains why Josh Kelly, an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech, has the upside to not only make this roster, but potentially break into the starting unit.

“Dallas didn't take a single wide receiver between April 24 and April 26. This applies even more pressure for someone to step up next to CeeDee Lamb. That's where Josh Kelly crashes the party here. The Texas Tech WR is one of the nine UDFA's coming for a roster spot. Kelly caught 89 passes for 1,023 yards and scored five touchdowns this past season.

Dallas still needs a contested catch option and one who can work through traffic. Kelly needs to deliver a training camp featuring no dropped passes and lots of red zone touchdowns. He'll need to do the same during August games to make the cut. Fortunately for him, he's got a history of consistent hands and inside-the-20 scoring.”

Kelly has gradually improved throughout his college career and fits in well on the Cowboys’ roster. The Fresno, California native was a victim of not testing well at the combine, particularly in the 40-yard dash, where he ran just a 4.7. Kelly, however, is much more dynamic in pads and, as Reyna states, has the hands to be a reliable red zone option.

Overall, the Cowboys need a few players from their current wideout group to emerge as reliable options behind CeeDee Lamb. Despite going undrafted, if Kelly grabs the bull by the horns, he could find himself on “America’s Team” for a very long time.
