After 29 years and 5 championships, Gregg Popovich has decided to step away from the sidelines to become the full-time president of basketball operations.
The San Antonio Spurs are one of the most successful organizations in the NBA, dominating the mid-2000s, and it was not just because of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginóbili, Tony Parker and company.
Gregg Popovich has officially decided not to return as head coach, according to NBA insider Shams Charania -- likely because he suffered a mild stroke in November of 2024.
Popovich was expected to return to his head coaching position, but did not return to the sidelines -- leaving Mitch Johnson as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season.
Popovich won an NBA record 1,422 regular-season games and won 3 Coach of the Year awards. He also has a finals record of 5-1, proving him to be the cream of the crop in even the toughest situations.
The Spurs made 22 consecutive playoff appearances, all under the reign of Popovich from 1997-2022.

Popovich was also chosen as Head Coach of the USA men's national team (2017-2020) and led them to gold in the 2020 Olympics.
His 5 championships came in 3 different decades, all against different teams. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023, recognizing him as one of the best coaches in history.
