The Denver Broncos aggressively attacked free agency this offseason and one of the best moves they or arguably any other team made was to sign San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw to a three-year deal. However, a recent injury to Greenlaw has already raised some concerns.
It seems that the quadriceps injury may not be as serious as first thought, but it might be a good move for the Broncos to look for another option, just in case, as Greenlaw and the other projected inside linebacker, Alex Singleton, have both been banged up.
Sterling Xie of Pro Football Sports Network touched on that when detailing one free agent each team should sign following the draft. He feels the Broncos should target veteran linebacker C.J. Mosley. Xie had the following to say on the potential signing:
"The Denver Broncos got a post-draft scare but seem to have avoided a worst-case scenario with Dre Greenlaw’s quadriceps injury. Still, given that projected starters Greenlaw and Alex Singleton have both suffered major lower-body injuries in the last 14 months, it might be worth adding a more reliable veteran to the room.
After the Broncos didn’t draft an off-ball linebacker, their top two backups at the position are Drew Sanders and Justin Strnad. Sanders himself is also coming off a major injury (a torn Achilles that limited him to four games in 2024), while Strnad’s eight starts last year were more than he had in his first three seasons combined (five).
C.J. Mosley is available and the most proven off-ball linebacker left in free agency. Granted, Mosley himself was limited to four games with toe and neck injuries last year, so he doesn’t have the cleanest bill of health either. However, he missed just one game from 2021-23 combined, and fared well in coverage with 7.6 yards per target allowed in that span.
If healthy, he’d give the Broncos a higher floor if Greenlaw and/or Singleton miss time again."
There is little doubt that Mosley, 32 and 33 in June, is past the prime of his career. But he is experienced and has played the position at a high level during his career. The Broncos may need to take a platoon approach at the inside linebacker position in 2025 and Mosley could be a more than capable hand if the Broncos were in a jam.
After spending the past six seasons with the New York Jets, Mosley showed that when healthy, he is still a solid option, posting 150+ tackles in each season from 2021-23.
Over the course of his career, Mosley has racked up nearly 1,00 tackles and he has been noted for his ability to drop back into coverage. He has probably lost at least half of a step at this point, but it wouldn't hurt the Broncos to bring him in for a look and potentially kick the tires, especially if there is any doubt about Greenlaw's recovery time.
