The Philadelphia Phillies had a disappointing postseason. Their offensive stars failed to produce on the biggest stage. They could look to shake things up and move some of their big-name players this offseason.
While listing Phillies players who the team should move on from via trade, FanSided's Matt Grazel urged the team to trade outfielder Nick Castellanos.
"The 32-year-old right fielder has exhibited his tendency to chase balls out of the zone. His hitting approach represents what the Phillies lineup has an abundance of and needs less of," wrote Grazel. "In terms of changing the roster via trades, Dombrowski said that Castellanos and Marsh will play roles with the club next season. However, that could change if a trade opportunity presents itself."
Castellanos signed a five-year, $100 million deal with the Phillies before the 2022 season. He is a two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger. He slashed .254/.311/.431 in 2024. It was his lowest batting average since joining the Phillies. He also hit less home runs in 2024 than in 2023. The only bright side was his strikeouts were down from 185 to 139 from 2023 to 2024.
The Phillies are paying Castellanos $20 million to play like a star. However, 2024 may be an indication of an incoming decline. The Phillies would hate to see Castellanos go, but owner Dave Dombrowski has noted that it is sometimes necessary to trade good players. Dombrowski said the Phillies need to be “open-minded to exploring what’s out there for us.”
“Sometimes you trade good players for good players,” said Dombrowski.
