Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders may have overplayed his hand at the Buffs’ Black and Gold spring game on Saturday. There was nothing wrong with how the exhibition was conducted. Instead, the problem was with Coach Prime using the event to retire Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter’s jersey numbers.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio called Sanders’ decision to do that so soon a mistake.

“While it may be a ‘now’ generation, that doesn’t justify continuing to ignore those from the pre-Veruca Salt era. And the decision to quickly retire 2 and 12 does indeed seem to be a mistake,” Florio wrote.

“Some could also question the decision to retire both jerseys this weekend and not, say, during home games that the players can attend — together or separately. If Deion thought doing it right now would lead to a spike in fans at the spring game, it didn’t.”

Sanders went on an extended rant about the “now” generation, seemingly tossing Amazon and Uber under the bus but secretly promoting brands he does business with, directly or indirectly.

“This is a new generation,” Sanders said, per USA Today. “Everything y’all want, you want it right now. And you go get it right now. You don’t wait for nothing no more, do we? We wanna go, we call Uber. We wanna eat, who we call? UberEats? Everything we get is right now. We want something, we order it off Amazon, right now. We ain’t in no waiting generation no more. That’s over. That’s a wrap on that.  Everybody in here is impatient. You’re downloading stuff right now putting it out, as I speak. This ain’t that no more. Let’s stop.”

The rant was real. Not all of it, but most.

And it may have become because Sanders knows deep down that he may have disrespected CU Buffs legends who accomplished a lot more than Shedeur and Hunter.
