The Oklahoma City Thunder are one of the scariest teams in the NBA, but they might still be too young to contend.
The Thunder would definitely benefit from having a veteran presence in the locker room, kind of like how Chris Paul helps the San Antonio Spurs and their young core.
Here’s an outside-of-the-box idea — what if Oklahoma City decided to poach Paul directly from the Spurs and employ the 12-time All-Star in a backup role to spell Shai Gilgeous-Alexander?
It’s not a completely novel proposal, as Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz suggested Paul-to-OKC in a new report on Monday.
“The Oklahoma City Thunder will probably play things low-key before the deadline, choosing to grow out this young core and let the roster develop organically,” Swartz said.
“That being said … a reunion with Paul or (Dennis) Schröder as a veteran playmaker off the bench behind Gilgeous-Alexander would help, especially in the postseason.”
Many people forget that Paul played on the Thunder in the 2019-20 season. Not only that, but CP3 averaged 17.6 points and 6.7 assists per game for Oklahoma City in 70 contests and finished No. 7 in MVP voting.
While Paul is loving life in San Antonio as the big brother to Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle (two potential Hall of Famers in their own right), what he’d enjoy even more is getting the chance to return to the Thunder and win his first ring.
