The Wells Fargo Championship tees off Thursday at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, and we're targeting five players who can win at longer odds.

This event has a history of producing first-time winners at juicy odds. That trend continued last year when Wyndham Clark paid out at +7500!

For the first time, North Carolinians can legally bet on this PGA Tour signature event. North Carolina sportsbooks are doling out thousands of dollars in betting bonuses that you can use to wager on the Wells Fargo Championship.

Wells Fargo Championship sleeper picks & longshots

Let's begin our quest to cash some winning tickets with sleeper picks, which we will define as players checking in at odds of +2500 or longer.

Cameron Young (+2500)

Young is regarded as the best player yet to win on the PGA Tour. The former Wake Forest golfer has seven runner-up finishes in his young career. That includes a second-place finish in the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship.

Young is also no stranger to success in golf's biggest events with two top-fives in majors including a runner-up finish in the 2022 Open Championship. Quail Hollow, a major-caliber course that hosted the 2017 PGA Championship, suits his game.

Sahith Theegala (+2800)

Simply put, Theegala has been a stud in PGA Tour signature events this season. In five tournaments, he's posted three top-10s including a pair of runner-up finishes.

  • The Sentry (second)
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational (T-6)
  • RBC Heritage (second)

Long off the tee, Theegala is statistically the best putter on the PGA Tour over the last 36 rounds. Those are two major ingredients for success at Quail Hollow.

Akshay Bhatia (+5000)

Our fondness for Bhatia grew a few weeks back when he won the Texas Valero Open at +6500. That's the type of winning ticket we're looking for again in the Wells Fargo.

Bhatia, a smooth-swinging lefty, outlasted Denny McCarthy in a playoff to score his first win on the PGA Tour. He appears to be the next coming of Theegala given his style of play.

Denny McCarthy (+7000)

McCarthy is knocking on the door of his first win. The loss to Bhatia in Texas marked his latest disappointment, but last year's runner-up finish in the highly regarded Memorial Tournament might have stung more.

McCarthy led the way for most of the final round until a bogey on No. 18 left him in a playoff with Viktor Hovland, last year's FedEx Cup Series champion. Another bogey on No. 18 in the playoff sealed his fate.

McCarthy is widely considered the best putter on tour, and he showed out with a T-8 finish in last year's Wells Fargo Championship. He could be this year's Wyndham Clark at very similar odds.

Jake Knapp (+12500)

Full disclosure: Recency bias is influencing this longshot selection. Knapp held the lead at the midway point of last weekend's CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas. The mullet-sporting Californian couldn't close the deal, and we cashed a live bet on Taylor Pendrith to win heading into the third round.

But Knapp left a lasting impression with his length off the tee and precise iron play. He scored his maiden victory in this year's Mexico Open, and his T-8 finish last weekend gives us good form heading into the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.
