The Laver Cup comes to San Francisco from September 19-21, 2025, with a strong American presence set to lead the charge for Team World.

Team Europe regained the trophy in Berlin in 2024, with a contest that went to the wire.

Carlos Alcaraz's win over Taylor Fritz in the final rubber concluded a phenomenal comeback win for the Europeans. Both Alcaraz and Fritz will be in action once more at Chase Center.

The 2025 tournament also heralds a new era for the Laver Cup. Since its inception in 2017, fellow greats and old rivals Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe served as team captains up to and including last year.

But this year's Laver Cup captains are Yannick Noah, who will replace Bjorn Borg at the helm for Europe, and Andre Agassi, who takes over for McEnroe.

So, how will each team seek to plot a path to victory and how do they pick up the points required? Here's everything you need to know.

Laver Cup format

The 2025 Laver Cup will be contested over 12 matches — nine singles and three doubles — maintaining the traditional format that has been in place since the competition's inception.

On the first two days, three singles rubbers will precede a concluding doubles encounter. On the final day, the doubles gets the action underway before the three singles showdowns.

The winning team will be the first to reach 13 points. If the scores are level after the 12 rubbers, a deciding "overtime doubles" match will be played as a single set with a tiebreak if required.

Once a team reaches 13 points, no further matches are played, meaning no dead rubbers. If there is only one match required in Sunday's play, fans will be treated to an exhibition.

How are points scored in the Laver Cup?

A weighted points-scoring system means the action is guaranteed to run until Sunday.

  • Day 1: Each match is worth one point
  • Day 2: Each match is worth two points
  • Day 3: Each match is worth three points

As such, even if a team is swept over the first two days, the maximum lead possible is 12-0. Twice, in Europe's 2021 success and Team World's dominant triumph in 2023, the action has been wrapped up by the Sunday doubles.

However, 2024 was the third time in seven editions the event has gone all the way to the deciding singles match.
