The New Orleans Saints' 2025 season was thrown a curveball recently when it was revealed that quarterback Derek Carr is dealing with a shoulder injury that could impact his availability for the upcoming campaign.
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis has since addressed the situation, saying the team will have more answers in the near future.
"He does have an issue with his shoulder," Loomis said. "We're hoping to get some resolution and clarity on that in the near future, and when we do, I'll report back to you. Otherwise, I don't have any more to state about Derek."
And now, Carr has addressed his injury, also.
While speaking at a church service over the weekend, Carr clapped back at all of his critics in the wake of his injury and confirmed that he is indeed dealing with a shoulder issue, although he didn't go into much detail about the specifics.
“Yes, I have to say this,” Carr said. “I hate that I have to say this, but I have to say this. Yes, I have a shoulder injury, despite what ESPN says. And what some lady on a podcast might think, OK? I have an MRI report to prove it. The team knows about it. We’ve been in constant communication. There’s nothing wrong. We’re figuring it out, and we’re gonna go forward with that. Is that OK?
“And I’ve been dealing with this, and I’ve been dealing with people lying about me and I’ve been dealing with them saying this and this and that, and I’m like, ‘Lord, why do I have to continue to deal with this nonsense? Like, what is going on?’ And I said that to a preface with you never know what someone’s really going through.
“And so why do we continually try to attack people? And I would say attack people that are trying to do things maybe the right way. Why do we continually try — why do we always have to have an opinion? Why do we — Twitter and Instagram has ruined things for some people? Because now all these people think that they have voices that have to be heard, and so like some people’s voices don’t need to be heard right now. I’ve just got to be honest with you. Because not one of our opinions in here matters. Did you know that? The only opinion that matters is that text right there. It is the word of God. And everything must bow at that.”
Carr's injury came out of nowhere and we don't have any real information on it, so that has led to plenty of speculation about what could be going on behind the scenes, especially with his uncertain future in New Orleans.
The Saints restructured Carr's contract to free up more money for the team to spend in free agency, but the overwhelming thought is that this could be his last year with the team.
Meanwhile, the Saints have started planning for the future after New Orleans took Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft.
The Saints could pass the torch from Carr to Shough if the former isn't ready for the start of the season. However, chances are Carr will keep his job for the time being if he can get himself ready for 2025.
