Who is Les Kiss? Queensland Reds coach set to inherit Wallabies top job image

For the fifth time in six years, a new face will coach the Wallabies - Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss.

With current head coach Joe Schmidt stepping down after just over a year in the role, his successor has been chosen following a lengthy negotiation period.

But just who is the next man up to lead Australia's national side?

Who is Les Kiss?

Les Kiss is a 60-year-old Australian rugby union coach, who has been tipped as the next head coach of the Wallabies.

Currently the head coach of Super Rugby Pacific team the Queensland Reds, Kiss cut his teeth as a player in rival code rugby league.

He played 100 games for the North Sydney Bears from 1986 to 1993, as well multiple appearances for Queensland in State of Origin, and even four games for the Australian Kangaroos.

His transition to the 15-man code began near the start of his coaching career, working with the Springboks in 2001 after a brief stint with now-defunct NRL side the Northern Eagles.

"My journey, you always felt like you had to earn your stripes, as a leaguie. Coming into union, I was very diligent. I researched the game and I became a student of the game. I was patient and I knew I had, not so much to learn, but I knew I had to gain the experiences I needed," Kiss said in 2024.

From there, he took up a position with the NSW Waratahs, and went on to work with both the Australia A side and the U21 team, before spending time coaching in England and Ireland.

He returned to Australia in late 2023, taking up the mantle of Reds coach, and will now fill the gap left by Joe Schmidt at the head of the Wallabies.

"He seems to have done a pretty good job at the Reds, so it’s a good opportunity for him. He’s definitely done a lot of good hard work, so I hope it goes well for him," said former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones of Kiss.

When will Les Kiss take over as Wallabies coach?

Kiss is expected to be officially named as Wallabies head coach, holding a press conference in Sydney this Wednesday before re-joining his Super Rugby side in Fiji ahead of their Saturday clash against the Drua.

He will see out the remainder of the Reds season, before taking control of the Wallabies ahead of his first Test as head coach in late October, against Eddie Jones’ Japan side in Tokyo.

Who will coach the Queensland Reds?

There was a slight hold up in Kiss taking up the job as Wallabies head coach, owing to his contract with the Reds running through 2026.

But after much debate around these contractual issues, Kiss was ultimately granted a release, and will leave Queensland's Super Rugby side without a coach of their own.

While some in rugby pitched the idea of Kiss holding dual-coaching gigs, similar to Michael Cheika in 2014-15 when he helmed both the Wallabies and the Waratahs, it is believed that the Reds coach will move on from the team, as well as bring along a select number of personnel.

As of right now, Kiss' Reds successor is not known, but could include one of two star assistant coaches Zane Hilton and Jonathan Fisher, both of whom joined the team in 2024.

"For so long it’s been a dream of mine to be working for the Queensland Reds," Hilton said at the time of hiring.

"Les gives you a confidence as a coach to do your role and do it well, and for me that’s probably the part I’m loving the most."

"He’s (Les) very open-minded, I got an opportunity to work with him very early on as a young coach because he was so receptive to some ideas I had. I can’t speak highly enough of him," added Fisher.
