Ken Hinkley will step down from the Port Adelaide coaching role at the end of the season and hand over to assistant Josh Carr.

The long-mooted coaching transition was made public by the Power on Wednesday with a statement involving all parties.

Carr will be handed an initial three-year senior coaching contract that will commence at the start of the 2026 campaign.

Port Adelaide president David Koch stated Hinkley was the party to decide that 2025 would his final season at Alberton after becoming coach in 2013.

Hinkley - who will likely become a prime target for new franchise Tasmania - was fully supportive of the coaching handover and was ready for the season to come.

“I’ve enjoyed open dialogue with the club for some time now in regards to this being my final season in charge,” Hinkley said.

“I, along with our leaders at the club, always have an eye for the future and as I’ve been saying for the last year, Josh Carr is absolutely the best person to take over as senior coach at the right time.

“I still have a burning desire to lead this club in 2025. I’m fresh and recharged and have the privilege of leading a very driven playing and coaching group.

“But come the end of the season, it will be time to hand the baton to Josh who would have experienced a further 12 months’ growth as a senior assistant. Without question, Josh will be ready to coach in his own right.”

Hinkley has been under significant pressure as Port Adelaide coach over the last couple of seasons after finishing top four on four occasions in his tenure, but never reaching a grand final.

Carr is a premiership player with the Power and played 124 games for the club, and has had two stints as an assistant coach at Port Adelaide between 2011-15 and from 2023.
