North Melbourne have confirmed that defender Jackson Archer will miss approximately eight weeks after suffering a high-grade hamstring strain in Thursday night’s three-point loss to Essendon.
The 22-year-old was substituted out of the game during the second quarter, clutching at his left leg in clear distress after being tackled near the wing. Scans on Friday revealed significant damage, with Archer now facing another extended spell on the sidelines.
It’s another cruel blow for the Kangaroos youngster, who had only just returned to the side following earlier hamstring issues and a three-match suspension this season.

“Really disappointing news” for Roos
North Melbourne’s general manager of football Todd Viney acknowledged the setback as a frustrating one for both player and club.
“Obviously, this is really disappointing news for Jackson and our whole program,” Viney said in a club statement on Friday afternoon. “He’s a key part of our defensive structure and was only just finding continuity in his footy again after missing a few weeks.”
“We anticipate Jackson will miss approximately eight weeks, but that timeline will depend on his early rehab progress.”

Archer was replaced by Bailey Scott as North Melbourne reshuffled their backline. Head coach Alastair Clarkson expressed his disappointment at the time but pointed to the nature of the contest. “But Ridley hurts his (as well). That’s the game, isn’t it?” Clarkson told Channel 7.
Essendon’s Jordan Ridley was also forced off with a hamstring injury on the night, adding to a brutal evening for both backlines. While Essendon held on for a 65-62 win, both clubs emerged from the clash, counting the cost of a physically taxing contest.
