Jets head coaching rumors tracker: Latest news on Ron Rivera, Rex Ryan and more potential New York candidates image

The Jets are looking ahead to 2025, a process that started back in early October when they fired coach Robert Saleh.

The Jets' next coach will face an uphill climb from day one. New York doesn't have a long-term solution at quarterback regardless of what happens next with Aaron Rodgers, and the team often looked anything but cohesive this season while piling up penalties.

Still, it's one of 32 NFL head coaching jobs. Any vacancy will draw widespread interest, and the Jets could cast a wide net in their search.

Here are the latest rumors surrounding the Jets' coaching search.

Glenn has been with the Lions since 2021, and has made Detroit's defense one of the most dominant in the last two seasons. Joseph is Denver's defensive coordinator. He was Denver's head coach from 2017-2018, finishing 11-21 overall.

Jets request to interview Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown

New York's interview list is becoming pretty extensive, as you can add current Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown to the list. He is in his first season in Minnesota, and has helped Sam Darnold have a career-best season with the Vikings. He spent the 2023 season as the Panthers' quarterbacks coach.

Prior to his career in coaching, he spent 16 years in the NFL as a quarterback. He finished 23-53 as a starter overall, spending four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before bouncing around the league until 2019.

New York requests to interview Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores

Is there any coach that the Jets' aren't interviewing? On Monday, New York also put in a request to interview current Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

Flores, who has been in the league since 2008, was the Miami Dolphins' head coach from 2019-2021, where he finished with a 24-25 record. In Feb. 2022, Flores filed a lawsuit against the NFL and a number of teams alleging racial discrimination in the league's hiring processes, as well as sordid practices within the Miami organization. Earlier this season, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa spoke about how difficult it was to play under Flores.

After his time with Miami, Flores spent 2022 as a defensive assistant with Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and has been the Vikings' defensive coordinator since 2023.

Jets put in request for 49ers quarterbacks coach Brian Griese

The former Broncos, Dolphins, Buccaneers and Bears quarterback has spent the last two years as thr 49ers quarterbacks coach. Prior to this, he worked with ESPN from 2009-2020 as a color commentator.

He was in ESPN's Monday Night Football booth from 2020-2022.

New York requests to interview Kansas City OC Matt Nagy

The Jets are wasting no time catching a wide net with their coaching search. On Monday, New York also requested to interview current Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for its head coaching vacancy.

Nagy has been with the Chiefs since 2022, starting as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach before being named the OC in 2023. From 2018-2021, Nagy was the head coach of the Chicago Bears, where he finished with a 34-31 record over four seasons.

He spent the majority of his NFL coaching career prior to the Bears with the Philadelphia Eagles and Chiefs. He was in Philadelphia from 2008-2012, starting as an intern and becoming an offensive quality control coach from 2011-2012. He was with KC from 2013-2017, as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

Jets enter request to interview Texans OC Bobby Slowik

New York has requested to interview current Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.

Slowik, who was in San Francisco from 2017-2022, has been with the Texans since 2023. Slowik started his coaching career as a defensive assistant with Washington from 2011-13.

During the 2023-24 coaching cycle, Slowik was a hot name, and he drew interest from the Seahawks, Falcons, Panthers and Commanders. Although the Texans had a high-powered offense last season, Houston has regressed a bit during the 2024 season.

The Texans will face the Los Angeles Chargers in the first round of the playoffs.

New York requests to interview Steelers OC Arthur Smith

The Jets are planning to interview Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Although the Steelers have lost their last four straight games, Smith and quarterback Russell Wilson led Pittsburgh to a 10-3 start to the season.

Smith was the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons from 2021-2023, where he finished 21-30 overall. Prior to his time in Atlanta, he was with the Tennessee Titans from 2011-2020. He started as a defensive quality control coach before eventually moving to coaching the tight ends and was Tennessee's offensive coordinator from 2019-2020.

Jets request to interview Bills OC Joe Brady

As they continue their head coaching search with the 2024-25 season officially over, the Jets are moving quickly. On Monday, the Jets requested to interview Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Brady has been in Buffalo since 2022 and has helped Josh Allen and the Bills secure a No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs.

Buffalo is also second in the league in points per game, averaging 30.9 per game. Prior to his time in Buffalo, he spent 2020-21 with the Carolina Panthers as their offensive coordinator and was LSU's passing game coordinator for the Tigers' national championship-winning season in 2019. He started his NFL career in New Orleans as an offensive assistant from 2017-18.

New York confirms it interviewed Mike Vrabel for head coaching job

Late last week, the Jets confirmed it completed an interview with Mike Vrabel. He was the head coach for the Tennessee Titans from 2018-23, where he finished 54-45 overall. He was with the Cleveland Browns as a coaching and personnel consultant for the 2024 season.

New York interviews with ESPN's Louis Riddick for GM vacancy

Head coach isn't the only position the Jets are hoping to fill this offseason. They're also seeking a replacement for former executive Joe Douglas, who Woody Johnson swiftly fired in mid-November.

One name reportedly bandied about: ESPN analyst Louis Riddick. The longtime television talking head hasn't been in the front office since joining the Worldwide Leader in 2013. However, he's an accomplished figure in the sport, parlaying a successful playing career as a defensive back into the general manager gig with the Titans and now, a spot in ESPN's broadcast booth.

Riddick has been linked with a series of gigs during his time at ESPN, including as Steelers GM in 2022. That job was eventually given to Omar Khan.

Jets confirm Rivera interview

The Jets confirmed they recently conducted an interview with former Panthers and Commanders boss Ron Rivera as they look to fill their head coaching vacancy.

Rivera, 61, represents the first person interviewed for the gig after Robert Saleh was handed his pink slip in early October. He's unlikely to be the last, though the Jets will have to wait until the end of the regular season to talk to current big-league coaches.

Jets interviewing Ron Rivera

The Jets are set to interview former Panthers and Commanders coach Ron Rivera, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.

Rivera is the first confirmed interview for the Jets, but the timing likely isn't significant. New York can't interview current NFL coaches until the regular season ends, but Rivera is free to speak to any team after spending the season away from the football.

The 61-year-old Rivera reached the Super Bowl in his 9-season stint as Panthers head coach, reaching the playoffs four times and going 76-63-1 while overseeing the Cam Newton years.

Rivera was less successful over four seasons in Washington, though he did win at least seven games three times under Dan Snyder's ownership. The Commanders gave Rivera some personnel control, which largely backfired after a series of poor drafts. Washington finished 4-13 in Rivera's final season.

Rex Ryan says he plans to speak with Jets

Former Jets and Bills head coach Rex Ryan told ESPN New York radio that he expects to talk to the Jets about their head coaching vacancy after the season ends.

Ryan has made it no secret that he's angling for a second stint as Jets head coach, telling ESPN's Mike Greenberg in November that he wanted the job. "I mean there's one thing I'm missing and that's to win a Super Bowl as a head coach ... And the organization I want to do that with is the New York Jets because you know I bleed green and white," Ryan said.

Ryan's 6-year tenure as Jets coach has aged well, as he reached back-to-back AFC championship games, and the team hasn't returned to the playoffs since. That streak started with Ryan, though. The Jets went 26-38 over Ryan's final four seasons, leading to his firing in 2014. Ryan spent the following two seasons as head coach of the Bills and has been on TV ever since.

While a return to New York might seem far-fetched, it's no surprise the Jets might be interested in a no-nonsense coach after their season went so far off the rails despite high expectations.
