Man City vs Tottenham: Premier League result, score, stats as Spurs hammer champions with Maddison at the double image

ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Manchester City's losing streak was extended to five matches as Tottenham hammered the forlorn Premier League champions 4-0, James Maddison starring with a first-half brace.

City were beaten in each of their past two top-flight matches at Bournemouth and Brighton but made a more assured start on home turf as Erling Haaland twice went close during the opening stages. It was no surprise Man City seemed to be a bit more comfortable at the Etihad, as they had not been beaten at home in over 740 days.

But Spurs drew first blood as Josko Gvardiol hesitated under a high ball and Dejan Kulusevski sent in a delightful cross from the right for the recalled James Maddison to volley home at the back post.

Maddison doubled his delight and City's misery shortly afterwards. Gvardiol, one of City's better performers this season, was again culpable with a dreadful pass across his own third. Son Heung-min cleverly dummied a shot and tickled through a pass for Maddison to dink home.

City 0-4 Spurs as it happened | Team news and lineups | Where to watch where you are

The earlier celebratory feel, after ACL victim Rodri paraded his Ballon d'Or on the pitch and the City fans saluted Guardiola's latest contract extension, was stripped away and a team low on confidence, goal threat and physicality looked exposed and vulnerable.

It could have been 3-0 before Pedro Porro gleefully slammed past Ederson early in the second half. Tottenham then bettered the margin of victory they enjoyed on the other side of Manchester at Old Trafford when substitutes Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson combined in stoppage time.

Ange Postecolgou's team remain a mystery wrapped in an enigma, but they're up to sixth after bouncing back from a loss to Ipswich Town that feels even more inexplicable. City remain second but could be eight points behind Liverpool by the end of tomorrow before a daunting trip to Anfield next weekend.

Ederson's opposite number Guglielmo Vicario did well to preserve his clean sheet but City never truly threatened the sort of stirring comeback that has become a hallmark under Guardiola. If the new contract marks the start of a new cycle for the Catalan tactician, this vintage of his great side looks very much like it is coming towards the end of one. That impression might be confirmed in the brutal fashion imaginable on Merseyside next weekend.

Man City vs. Tottenham live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime

It's five defeats in a row for City but you have to go all the way back to Pep Guardiola's first season in charge for the last time his team were hammered to such an extent. Maybe even further back than that. City are a shadow of the team that have won six out of the past seven Premier League titles and Tottenham brutally took them apart. Ange Postecoglou's side were fantastic, James Maddison's brace hopefully kick-starting a fine player who has been in a rut. Liverpool at Anfield up next for City, by which point Arne Slot's men could be eight points clear of them at the top of the table. Welp.

90+3: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Brennan Johnson!!!!

City's misery is complete. Grealish plays a ball towards where he thinks Walker might be. He isn't and the famously pacy defender is left for dirt by Timo Werner. His cross is slid home at the back post by Johnson.

90+1 mins: We're into stoppage time. City have had 23 shots to Tottenham's eight but that doesn't really tell the story.

85 mins: The City half-chances continue to flow as Gvardiol whistles a shot beyond the crossbar. Spurs look like they've checked out a bit here.

84 mins: Grealish to the far post, where Silva clatters over an ambitious volley.

83 mins: Grealish shuffles through some traffic for Akanji to have a shot deflected behind. A lively, wound-up De Bruyne takes it short and has his shot blocked.

79 mins: Haaland wins back second ball, nice give and go with De Bruyne but Vicario makes the save. De Bruyne then clatters into Davies trying to reach the rebound. There's some pushing and shoving and he's booked.

77 mins: Gundogan gets into the box and blasts at Vicario. It's a corner, which Spurs clear but the obvious energy boost De Bruyne has given City makes it baffling that substitution didn't happen much sooner.

74 mins: De Bruyne and Grealish are on for Lewis and Savinho, who like most in sky blue have not had their best day at work.

70 mins: De Bruyne and Grealish are about to start heaving at a stable door with the horse several fields away. Vicario saves a tame shot from Foden.

69 mins: Decent cross from Gvardiol but Haaland gets his jump all wrong at the back post and that's basically a clearance.

67 mins: Some nice play from City ends with Lewis clipping a shot over from the edge of the box. You never really expect the teenager to score from there. Outside of Haaland and the increasingly anonymous Foden, there really aren't enough goals in this City side to make the improbable comeback remotely credible.

66 mins: Spurs tear through City once again. Kulusevski looks certain to score but Ederson makes a fabulous reaction save.

65 mins: Gvardiol clouts a half-volley over at the back post. Guardiola claps and shouts some encouragement.

64 mins: Brennan Johnson on for Son. The Wales international might well find some wide open space to his liking.

60 mins: Haaland turns a cracks one against the top of the crossbar. That was barely even a half chance but almost the moment of magic City need. Even if that had flown in they're probably doomed here, but nevertheless.

58 mins: Rain lashing down now and it's the City fans making all the noise as 'Blue Moon' rings out. Fans happy to go down with their team but would prefer them to go down swinging. Still no changes in midfield or attack from the bench by Guardiola.

53 minsGOOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Pedro Porro!!!

Surely no way back for City now. Tottenham storm forward, they look physically miles ahead of their opponents. The ball for Solanke is overhit but he retrieves it and the on-rushing Porro lashes a fine finish past Ederson.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

City get us back underway. Ake is on for Stones. In the present circumstances for Guardiola's side there's really no way of knowing whether that's tactical or because of an injury. Kevin De Bruyne is warming up and surely we'll see him soon.

Halftime

Pep Guardiola said this week that it was not the right time for him to leave Manchester City. Increasingly that looks like it's because he recognises the rebuilding job his all-conquering side now needs. They're plummeting towards a fifth consecutive defeat after being picked off by a James Maddison brace. City could have scored a couple, but Spurs look good for a couple more against the forlorn champions.

45 mins+2: Ridiculously petulant foul from Walker on Maddison. The City skipper has had another tough 45 minutes.

45 mins+1: Into stoppage time. Spurs want to finish this right now. Stones blocks Kulusevski's cross but City are beyond laboured in midfield and perpetually scrambling in defence as a result.

43 mins: Bernardo Silva whips in a nice cross from the left and Foden blazes an acrobatic effort over.

42 mins: Bissouma spanks one over. City restart in a disorderly fashion, Foden clatters into Davies. Son is into the area again but the home defence scramble to safety.

38 mins: Oh, Pedro Porro what are you doing? Stones aims a hopeful ball forward that the full-back glances upwards. It means Savinho almost gets on the end of it and Vicario has to take a whack to avert the danger.

37 mins: Savinho, who is still looking for his first City goal, cracks one from outside the box. Given the wet conditions and the fact he probably saw that late, Vicario does well to hold on.

33 mins: Foden's free-kick goes through everyone and Savinho completely misses it.

32 mins: Walker more or less grinds a City attack to a halt. Udogie then fouls him in a nice position down the right wing. That's dumb.

31 mins: Excellent stop from Vicario to keep out a Savinho header but the flag was up and replays show it wouldn't have counted.

30 mins: Chance for City to break. Savinho delays and delays before overhitting the through ball to Haaland, who is about as impressed as most of an increasingly frustrated home crowd.

28 mins: Solanke bashes a forlorn Walker out of the way. Ederson gets a touch on his rising shot and City must defend another corner.

27 mins: Foden takes on an early shot from a bouncing ball, Vicario rooted... wide of the far post. Hang on, Spurs have numbers on the break here. Walker gets to Kulusevski's cross before Son.

24 mins: City can't get hold of things in midfield and they're far too easy to play through. Son beats Walker with similar simplicity and Akanji scrambles behind at the near post.

22 mins: When they were struggling in the middle of their treble season, City beat Tottenham from 2-0 down in this fixture. It feels like a much taller order right now, though. Gvardiol in to Haaland... over.

20 minsGOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!!! James Maddison!!!!!!

Manchester City's title defence is completely falling apart! Gvardiol is culpable again with a dreadful ball back into traffic inside his own third. Son dummies to shoot but slips a clever ball to Maddison, who dinks home smartly.

19 mins: Kulusevski booms it over a back-pedalling Ederson and everyone else for a goal kick.

18 mins: Ohh, Solanke was almost through there but Stones closed the door. After their confident start, City suddenly look like a team that have lost their past four matches. Son goes for the spectacular... Ederson saves. Well done everyone! Corner to Tottenham on the right.

16 mins: Foden scampers into the Spurs box and lifts a shot over. The chances are definitely there for City.

15 mins: Spurs looking to increase their advantage and Gvardiol partly atones by cutting out another ball aimed for Kulusevski.

13 minsGOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!!! James Maddison!!!!!!

Spurs lead at the Etihad again! Kulusevski is second favourite to a ball out to the right but picks Gvardiol's pocket. That's really poor from the City left-back. What isn't poor is Kulusevski's sumptuous left-footed cross that Maddison volleys home at the back post on his return to the starting line-up.

11 minsFine save from Vicario! Savinho and Foden are both playing quite narrow and close to Haaland. The Brazilian feeds his striker and Vicario thrusts out a boot to keep Haaland's first-time shot out of his bottom right corner. He covered the angles really well there.

10 mins: Careless giveaway from Foden inside the City half. Son drives a teasing low ball across goal that's just beyond Kulusevski.

6 mins: Tottenham deal with City's next corner in more assured fashion and Kulusevski almost catches out Walker under a bouncing ball before the hosts get back to work. It's been a strong start from Guardiola's men as Walker just fails to get on the end of Gunodgan's clipped ball to the back post.

5 mins: Bad miss from Haaland! Foden glides through the Tottenham midfield too easily and finds Gvardiol, who has been prominent in these opening exchanges. He picks out Haaland, whose first touch isn't great and his effort is deflected behind. He should have scored. Vicario flaps at the corner but Tottenham survive.

3 mins: Bissouma understandably hesitates over challenging Haaland, who finds Foden to work the ball to Gvardiol. The Croatia defender's cross finds City's No. 9 at the back post but Haaland's header back across goal is too high for Gundogan.

2 mins: Gundogan's delivery skims thought to Akanji who can't divert it goalwards.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Tottenham get us underway. Gundogan snaps in to win a challenge in midfield to set Foden running at the Spurs defence. Bissouma chops him down to earn a booking inside a minute. That doesn't feel ideal.

1 min before kickoff: Rodri gets a guard of honour from his team-mates now before Blue Moon rings around the stadium. Tottenham huddle away from it all near the travelling supporters. They'll fancy spoiling the party.

5 mins before kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel. Rodri has enjoyed a serious light show and some pyrotechnics before collecting his Ballon d'Or from a plinth in the centre circle. And a nifty bit of dancing from a man just the right side of major knee surgery. Now the City fans are serenading Pep Guardiola after he signed a new contract this week. For a team on a run of four consecutive defeats in all competitions, it feels important for the champions to ride this feelgood wave into the early stages of what promises to be a pulsating encounter. Here come the players...

20 mins before kickoff: Rodri is the guest of honour before kickoff today in City's first home match since the Spain midfielder won the Ballon d'Or. An ACL injury means it will probably be the only time he graces the Etihad Stadium turf before the end of this season.

Rodri Ballon d'Or 2024

45 mins before kickoff: Kevin De Bruyne's wait for a return to the Manchester City starting line-up goes on. The Belgium playmaker suffered a groin injury during the 0-0 draw against Inter Milan in September and Guardiola has trodden a careful path over his return. The 33-year-old, who missed six months of last season following hamstring surgery, made brief substitute cameos in the defeats to Sporting CP and Brighton.

Erling Haaland has certainly felt the weight of De Bruyne's absence. During the first four Premier League games of the season that they started together, Haaland scored a ridiculous nine goals including two hat-tricks. In his 11 games since, the two-time Golden Boot winner has amassed a far more mortal tally of six goals.

1 hr 5 mins before kickoff: Facing up to the challenge of Erling Haaland without your two first-choice central defenders is not an ideal predicament, but it is one Ange Postecoglou finds himself in today. Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies will have to shackle the big Norwegian in the absence of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, although Spurs fans will remember experienced Wales defender Davies was superb when thrust into that role last season.

James Maddison gets a start in the midfield three, meaning a move to the right wing for Dejan Kulusevski. The Sweden star has a superb record against City, with three goals and four assists in seven appearances.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in. John Stones and Manuel Akanji return to the heart of the Manchester City defence. Kevin De Bruyne is among the substitutes once more as Rico Lewis starts in midfield. Jeremy Doku is not in the squad and seemingly remains among Guardiola's walking wounded.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: Even by Manchester's infamous standards, it's very wet today. The Etihad Stadium, like much of the UK, is being battered by Storm Bert. The name of the storm has caused much merriment among some City fans, fittingly arriving in the week that their team returns to action and Pep Guardiola signs a new deal.

Confused? Well, Bertie Magoo the Bitter Blue was a character created by a Manchester United fanzine to mock their near neighbours, who were much more of a down-on-their-luck team prior to 2008. The term has since been appropriated by City fans, calling their own "Berts". Any act of petty or derisive — ideally both — humour at United's expense can be referred to as "Bertying".

2 hours before kickoff. Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of Manchester City vs. Tottenham. Pep Guardiola has signed up for two more years to commit to what will end up being an 11-year stay in Manchester. That was an unimaginable number once upon a time, much like his all-conquering team suffering five consecutive defeats. That's a fate they're facing up to today against Tottenham.

Man City vs. Tottenham lineups, team news

The international break came at the right time for City, and not just because of their dire run of results. The key factor in their malaise has been an injury list that is particularly weighty in the context of Guardiola's preferred small senior squad size. Mateo Kovacic suffering an injury blow during Croatia's draw with Portugal that will keep him out for a month this therefore less than ideal.

Rodri (ACL) and Oscar Bobb (broken leg) remain sidelined, as does Jeremy DokuJohn Stones and Manuel Akanji return to a previously injury-hir defence, while Phil Foden is fit to start after sitting out England duty. Jack GrealishKevin De Bruyne and Nathan Ake are all among the substitutes.

Man City (4-3-3, right to left): Ederson (GK) — Walker, Stones, Akanji, Gvardiol — Lewis, Gundogan, Silva — Foden, Haaland, Savinho

Injured: Ake, Rodri, Bobb, Dias, Kovacic, Doku
Suspended: None

Tottenham could be without two key defenders. Micky van de Ven is on the mend from the hamstring issue he suffered during the Carabao Cup win over City. Cristian Romero withdrew from Argentina's 1-0 win over Peru and will be assessed.

The attacking picture is a lot rosier for Postecoglou, although he will be without Wilson Odobert and Richarlison due to hamstring injuries and Mikey Moore is laid low following a virus. Rodrigo Bentancur begins a seven-game ban for racist remarks made about team-mate Son Heung-min.

Tottenham (4-3-3, right to left): Vicario (GK) — Porro, Dragusin, Dav ies Udogie — Maddison, Bissouma, Sarr — Kulusevski, Solanke, Son

Injured: Odobert, Van de Ven, Richarlison, Moore, Romero
