North Melbourne and Brisbane met in a repeat of last year's AFLW grand final with both sides looking to create history.
The Kangaroos went unbeaten through the regular season, before knocking off Adelaide and Port Adelaide in the finals to advance through to the decider.
Meanwhile, the Lions got the better of North Melbourne last season to lift the premiership and were aiming to go back-to-back, while also becoming the first club to win the women's and men's premierships in the same season.

Who won AFLW grand final 2024? Kangaroos beat Lions in decider
The Kangaroos got the better of the Lions during the opening game of the season.
In fact, they put the reigning premiers to the sword, especially during a historic onslaught in the third quarter, to emerge victorious by 44 points.
The following week Darren Crocker's side battled to a 36-all draw against Geelong which proved to be their only setback in an otherwise perfect campaign ahead of the final.
Nerves would undoubtedly have been prevalent though ahead of the decider as the Lions had beaten them in all but one of their previous matches.
Tess Craven put those nerves to bed early when she kicked the first major of the GF in front of a sold-out Ikon Park.
The small forward slotted with a set shot after the Lions had previously got the scoreboard ticking over first with a behind.
Alice O’Loughlin slammed through her side’s second shortly afterwards as they went from coast to coast, with the 22-year-old forward then rapidly bagging her second as the Kangas threatened to run away with the game.
The Lions finally responded when Ellie Hampson powered one through the sticks from 45m out to halt the opposition's momentum before quarter time.
Although the major proved to be a brief respite with the Kangaroos dominating the contest once again to head into the sheds with a 17-point lead after Vikki Wall scored the only goal of the second term.
"North Melbourne are owning all facets of the game," Collingwood vice-captain Ruby Schleicher summarised on Fox Footy.
"They have had 51 more disposals, so they're getting their hands on the ball more and they're winning contested and uncontested possessions, which we know is the game they like to play.
"They've been able to control the ball. Captain Emma Kearney is back in the side and she's just directing the play from the back."
The Lions have made a habit of producing second half surges, but there was no sign of this emerging in Melbourne as more of the same unfolded in the third.
The Queenslanders had found their opponent's defence practically impenetrable after only scoring one goal heading into the final turn. And they were unable to add to this, while the Roos had no such issue on their revenge mission.
Irish star Wall claimed her second of the night, before O'Loughlin kicked a game-high third major as the Kangaroos eased to a 6.3 (39) to 1.3 (9) victory to emerge with the club's first AFLW premiership.
Who was awarded Best on Ground in the AFLW grand final?
Jasmine Garner polled 11 votes to take out the Best on Ground award in the decider between North Melbourne and Brisbane.
The Kangaroos midfielder collected a game-high 35 disposals during the clash as her side made history to go through the entire AFLW season undefeated.
Garner also made 13 tackles and tallied 10 clearances during the comfortable win on Saturday evening.
Kearney, who returned from an extended layoff due to a hamstring injury, polled eight votes, while Ash Riddell was awarded four votes and O'Loughlin one.
