Kade Dykes’ nightmare run with injuries has continued, with the Cronulla Sharks confirming the young fullback has suffered a season-ending ruptured patella tendon while playing for the Newtown Jets over the weekend.
It’s the third consecutive year Dykes will miss the remainder of a season due to serious knee trouble, in what has become an all-too-familiar storyline for the talented 23-year-old.
The latest setback occurred during a NSW Cup clash against the Western Suburbs Magpies at Lidcombe Oval on Saturday, with a non-contact injury.

Initial fears centred around a potential knee dislocation, but scans have since confirmed a torn patella tendon in his right knee, which will require surgery and keep him sidelined for the next six to nine months.
Another cruel twist in Dykes' stop-start career
A Cronulla junior and versatile spine option, Dykes had only just returned to reserve grade action following a long rehabilitation from a left knee injury that wiped out his 2024 campaign. His debut season in 2022 saw him break into the top grade with two NRL appearances, but he’s been unable to add to that tally due to back-to-back season-ending injuries in 2023 and 2024.
The latest blow further depletes the Sharks’ depth at fullback, with youngster Liam Ison also ruled out for the season. The club’s re-signing of Dykes ahead of the 2025 campaign underlined their long-term faith in him, but the spate of injuries has stalled what once looked like a fast-track to the No.1 jersey.

His misfortune comes at a time when incumbent fullback Will Kennedy had seemingly silenced critics with his recent form. But should Kennedy face injury or suspension, Cronulla may now be left scrambling for cover in a key position.
Meanwhile, adding to Cronulla’s injury woes, centre Mawene Hiroti has been ruled out for four to six weeks after scans confirmed a high-grade MCL strain in his left knee, sustained during the first half against the Wests Tigers.
