We are set for an intriguing night race on Sunday, with the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix already chucking up some surprise results in qualifying.

Carlos Sainz took pole position at Marina Bay, followed by Mercedes' George Russell and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen has never won in Singapore, and he will have his work cut out for him, starting from 11th on the grid.

As for the Australians in contention, Daniel Ricciardo won't be behind the wheel as he recovers from an injury, but McLaren driver Oscar Piastri will continue to fly the flag.

F1 Singapore Grand Prix: Race start time in Australia

Despite the favourable time difference, it will still be a late night for Australian fans tuning into Sunday's race, with the start time scheduled for 10:00 pm AEST on September 17.

Drivers will complete 62 laps around the Marina Bay Street Circuit, in what is typically a physically demanding night race.

What happened to Daniel Ricciardo? Australian not driving at Singapore Grand Prix after crash

AlphaTauri driver Ricciardo suffered a hand injury following a crash in practice at Zandvoort, with hospital results showing he had broken a metacarpal in his left hand.

He has since had surgery and missed the Italian Grand Prix.

The Australian is now sitting out the weekend in Singapore and will likely skip the race in Japan too, with next month's Qatar Grand Prix a realistic return race.

Reserve driver and Red Bull junior Liam Lawson is continuing as his replacement in the meantime.
