Skylar Thompson injury update: Dolphins interim starting quarterback goes down with chest injury vs. Seahawks image

The Dolphins are running out of quarterbacks.

Interim starter Skylar Thompson was under center for Miami in Week 3 against the Seahawks. He was starting in place of Tua Tagovailoa, who was placed on injured reserve after suffering a concussion in its Week 2 loss to the Bills.

Thompson was having himself a decent day, completing 13-of-19 pass attempts for 107 yards before he went down with a chest injury in the third quarter.

Skylar Thompson injury update

Thompson was diagnosed with a chest injury and did not return to Sunday's game against the Seahawks.

Following the contest, head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed "It was a rib injury that was pretty painful. ... We'll get a chance to look at him tomorrow."

Thompson dropped back to pass in the third quarter when he took a shot from Seahawks defensive end Dre'Mont Jones. He stayed down on the ground, holding his midsection as the Dolphins' training staff attended to the quarterback.

Thompson eventually walked off the field but did not return on the drive. He was ruled out for the game after further evaluation.

Emergency third-string quarterback Tim Boyle stepped in to try and finish the drive but turned the ball over on downs after three plays.

Head coach Mike McDaniel said that Thompson is considered day-to-day.

Dolphins QB depth chart

With injuries to Tagovailoa and Thompson, the Dolphins are already down to their third-string quarterback, six-year veteran Boyle.

Miami also picked up dual-threat QB Tyler "Snoop" Huntley this week, but he was not activated on a short week.

Tua Tagovailoa

Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in the Dolphins' Week 2 loss to the Bills and was placed on injured reserve this week. He will be ineligible to return for four weeks, leaving a void for Miami's starting quarterback job.

Skylar Thompson

Thompson was expected to be the Dolphins' interim starter until Tagovailoa could get back on the field but he, too, is dealing with an injury. Without knowing the severity of Thompson's chest injury, the near future of Miami's starting quarterback position is a question mark.

Tim Boyle

Boyle stepped in for the injured Thompson on Sunday. He is a six-year veteran who has played for six different teams — the Packers, Lions, Bears, Jets and Dolphins — in that span.

Boyle started two games for the Jets last season but it wasn't pretty. He threw for 360 yards but had four interceptions to just one touchdown.

Tyler 'Snoop' Huntley

In light of Tagovailoa's injury, the Dolphins signed Huntley off the Ravens' practice squad.

Huntley is a dual-threat quarterback who has thrived in his role as Lamar Jackson's backup for four seasons.

He has collected 1,957 passing yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions over 20 games played. Huntley has also added 509 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on the ground.

He is a great candidate to move forward as Miami's starting quarterback if Thompson's injury is more "week-to-week" than "day-to-day."
