Are you familiar with the term 'perfect passer rating'? Does it annoy you to learn that completing all of your passes does not necessarily earn you a perfect passer rating?

Detroit Lions quarterback dominated the Seattle Seahawks defense in Week 4. He finished a perfect 18-18 passing for 292 yards and two touchdowns. Goff also caught a pass, but because of certain thresholds that make up a perfect passer rating, he doesn't qualify for the stat. Still, he had the most passing yards with no incompletions in NFL history. 

Seattle's offense was solid. They creeped their way down the field, utilizing impressive runs by Kenneth Walker and Geno Smith, coupled with big gains from DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Detroit, though, scored often and scored fast. 

After the Seahawks had a three-minute drive in the second quarter, the Lions had a one-play, 11-second touchdown drive as Goff hit Jameson Williams for the 70-yard touchdown.

There are several things to take away from this game. First, neither defense looked great. Sure, the Lions got the win, but they allowed nearly 400 passing yards to Smith. Plus rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold is a problem and not for opposing offenses. He picked up several penalties in the game and now has been whistled for defensive pass interference five times in the first four games of the season. 

Detroit was able to get into the backfield to disrupt Smith, and they finished with three total sacks. It's notable that none of them were by star defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson who's hot start had him on pace to destroy the single season sack record. 

Seattle should be fine if they can figure out how to pick up more stops on defense. The offense works well, especially when Walker is healthy. After missing two games the starting running back led the backfield with 80 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries. 

Both the Seahawks and the Lions are 3-1. Seattle will host the New York Giants in Week 5, while Detroit has an early bye week.

Seahawks vs. Lions updates, highlights from Monday night football

All times ET. This section will start being updated about two hours before kickoff. 

End of regulation: Lions 42, Seahawks 29

11:23 p.m. -- Smith throws into double coverage in the endzone trying to find JSN, but Kerby Joseph picked him off and this game will be over. 

11:22 p.m. -- Seattle gets the ball back on their own 20. Smith hits Metcalf for a 21-yard gain and then scrambles to the right for 11 yards. The QB is pressured on the next play and has to throw the ball away. Terrion Arnold is whistled for DPI yet again so Seattle moves down the field. Smith missed Lockett down field, but was roughed by the defense and draws a penalty. 

Lions 42, Seahawks 29

11:15 p.m. -- SAFETY! -- On the other side of the two-minute warning Detroit faces third and 13 backed up on their own goal line. In the break, the refs reviewed the play where Goff reached the ball out of the endzone, but when his knee hit the ball was on the white endzone line. It is now ruled a safety. Seattle gets two points and the ball back. 

11:13 p.m. -- Montgomery ran the ball for no gain, forcing Seattle to take a timeout. Goff is nearly brought down in the endzone but manages to reach the ball over the goal line to avoid the safety. At the two minute warning the Lions are up 42-27 and Seattle has one timeout left. 

11:10 p.m. -- Smith looked for JSN over the middle, but tried to force in the pass and was nearly picked off by Detroit's Alex Anzalone. On third down, Smith missed Metcalf in the endzone. Facing fourth and goal with arguably the game on the line, Seattle looked like they had a miscommunication on the snap. Smith tried to find Lockett in the endzone, but missed him. Detroit will take over on downs. 

11:08 p.m. -- Detroit jumped offsides and then Smith hit Bobo for another nine yard pickup, to get into the redzone. Smith runs it for 11 yards, and then there is defensive holding on the Lions. Smith had Lockett in the endzone, but the ball was batted down. There is 2:33 left in the game. 

11:04 p.m. -- Smith is sacked for a two yard loss, but gets it back after finding Walker for a 13-yard gain. The QB then hits Lockett for 13, but misses JSN deep left. The Seahawks get a first down from a 10-yard reception by Noah Fant and then a four-yard completion to JSN. 

Lions 42, Seahawks 27

10:59 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN! -- Goff stays perfect and this time finds St. Brown for a touchdown. The play is reviewed, but confirmed. 

10:57 p.m. -- Goff throws his first incompletion, but it doesn't count as Brock Wright is flagged for offensive pass interference. They toss it to Gibbs to the left and he picks up eight yards. He then runs the ball up the middle for four yards. Seattle calls its first timeout of the half with 5:29 left. 

10:54 p.m. -- Detroit gets the ball at their own 25 to start the drive. Goff stays perfect and hits Tim Patrick for a 29 yard gain. Gibbs follows it up with a three yard run. The second-year back runs it up the middle and picks up the first down with an eight-yard gain. 

Goff picks up a huge gain on a screen pass to LaPorta who picks up 30 yards. 

10:50 p.m. -- Charbonnet bounces it outside for a first down, but there was holding so the run comes back. Smith throws it right back to the backup running back who picks up six. Smith goes for Lockett, but the pass is broken up and Seattle elects to go for it on fourth down.

The Seahawks pick it up, but there are flags yet again. Lockett is flagged for offensive pass interference. Since it becomes fourth and 13 instead of fourth and three, Seattle elects to punt. 

10:45 p.m. -- Smith hits Charbonnet for three yards and then the rookie Barner for another 18. Charbonnet keeps it on the ground and picks up 12 and Seattle is already past midfield. Smith finds JSN for an eight-yard gain that he catches in the middle of the field and runs to the right. 

10:40 p.m. -- Detroit has responded all night when Seattle has scored, but no this time. Gibbs picks up seven yards on first down, and then two on second down. Montgomery tries to pick up the first, but the defenses forces a two-yard loss and a punt. 

Lions 35, Seahawks 27

10:38 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN! -- The final quarter begins with Smith missing Walker over the middle. The running back makes up for it by cutting a toss back for a 21-yard score. Walker now has three rushing touchdowns on the day. 

End of third quarter: Lions35, Seahawks 20

10:28 p.m. -- Smith starts the drive with a seven-yard pass to Walker, and then finds Lockett for another five yard gain. Walker escapes some would be tacklers and runs left for 23 yards. Smith is then sacked for four yards. He responds by finding Laviska Shenault Jr. for an 18-yard gain to end the quarter. 

Lions 35, Seahawks 20

10:25 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN! -- Detroit has responded all night when Seattle has scored, but usually they march down the field. This time, they needed just one play as Goff finds Jameson Williams for a 70-yard score. Goff is a perfect 14-14 passing for 225 yards and a touchdown. 

Lions 28, Seahawks 20 

10:17 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN!-- Walker ran the ball for a one-yard score. They review it and the play stood. Seattle went for two and it was incomplete. The refs called pass interference on the defense and the Seahawks get to try again.

10:15 p.m. -- Walker loses six yards on his next carry, but then Smith connects with Lockett on a huge 29-yard gain. Detroit had a defensive penalty and then Smith finds Bobo for 10 yards. 

10:12 p.m. -- Walker starts Seattle's next drive with a 28-yard run. Smith then picks up two yards on a broken play, then throws the ball away. He scrambles on third down and finds JSN for 11 yards. 

It feels like the Detroit line can get to Smith at-will, but the veteran QB is still finding ways to create big plays downfield. 

Lions 28, Seahawks 14

10:06 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN! -- Detroit may be giving up touchdowns, but they are responding quickly when they do. Montgomery looks like he is going to be stopped quickly, but breaks away from tackles and scampers for a 40-yard gain. 

Goff hits Tim Patrick for a 23-yard gain. Goff pitches it back to St. Brown, who then throws it to Goff in the endzone for a Detroit take on the Philly special. 

Lions 21, Seahawks 14

10 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN!-- Smith was looking for Metcalf deep, but the refs called defensive pass interference. Smith rolls to the right and finds rookie tight end AJ Barner for the nine-yard score. 

9:55 p.m. -- The second half has begun and Seattle has the ball to start. Seattle starts its first drive of the second half with Walker running the ball for six yards, but then losing a yard. JSN picks up a four-yard gain and Smith runs up the middle for two yards. 

The Seahawks are dinking and funking their way down the field with short runs and passes. Metcalf had a 10 yard gain, Walker another six yards and tight end Noah Fant for 16 yards.  

Third quarter

End of first half: Lions 21, Seahawks 7 

9:37 p.m. -- Despite having no timeouts, Smith tried threading the needle over the middle, but missed JSN. Smith ran for a 12-yard gain. Seattle is too far for a field goal attempt. Smith quickly hits Metcalf for a five yard gain and kicker

Jason Myers is lining up for a 62-yard kick. It would be a new career long for him. Seattle missed it, and Detroit tried to return it but to no avail. We go to halftime. 

9:32 p.m. -- Detroit's drive sputters out of the gate. There was a holding penalty on first down followed by a nine-yard gain by wide receiver Kalif Raymond. Goff was then sacked for a loss of eight yards and Detroit has lost seven yards since the drive began.

After a Seattle timeout, Gibbs ran the ball for five yards which was followed with the Seahawks' final timeout of the half. Detroit to punt as Seattle will have time for one or two plays before halftime. 

9:28 p.m. -- Smith missed tight end Noah Fant on a pass, but found Charbonnet for an eight-yard gain. The QB then couldn't connect with Metcalf and Seattle was forced to punt. Detroit will get the back back with about a minute left in the first half.

9:20 p.m. -- There is trickery afoot! Smith hits JSN for a short gain, but the wide receiver throws a backwards lateral to Charbonnet on the sideline who picks up 17 more yards. The Lions ran a similar play last week, and it seems like the Seahawks did their research. 

Charbonnet gets another two-yard reception which takes us to the two-minute warning. 

9:16 p.m. -- Smith hits backup running back Zach Charbonnet for a four yard gain through the air and then Lockett for another eight yards. Smith is then sacked for a six-yard loss. Itis second and 16 as Seattle takes its first timeout of the half. 

Lions 21, Seahawks 7

9:10 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN! -- Goff shows off that he can throw the ball too. He hits St. Brown for an eight-yard gain and then LaPorta for nine yards. Gibbs picked up 16 yards on three of the next four plays with St. Brown picking up a three-yard gain with the other. 

LaPorta gained 13 yards and St. Brown followed with another short gain, this one for five yards. After another too many men on the field by a defense, Detroit found itself on the one-yard line. Gibbs punched in his second touchdown of the night. 

Lions 14, Seahawks 7

9:03 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN! -- Walker ran the ball for two yards the next play. Smith then hit Metcalf for a 29-yard gain, that was nearly a touchdown, but he was ruled down at the 1. The defense had too many men on the play, putting Seattle on the one-yard line. Walker punched it in from one-yard out. 

9:00 p.m. -- Walker starts the next drive off with as four yard carry. Smith missed Pharoah Brown on a pass, but follows it up with a 10-yard gain to JSN. Smith couldn't find Metcalf in the middle of the field, but then threw it left to Brown for a three-yard pick up. 

Smith scrambles in the backfield and miraculously escapes pressure for a two yard gain. Defensive holding is called so Seattle gets to move down the field. Tyler Lockett finds the stat sheet with a six-yard gain. 

Smith continues airing the ball out and finds Walker for a 10-yard gain. The running back flipped up on the defender, was never down, and ran to pick up extra yardage. 

Lions 14, Seahawks 0

8:47 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN! -- Detroit only needed three plays to get into the endzone from its great starting field position. Gibbs had a one yard carry, ad Goff hit backup tight end Brock Wright for a 10-yard gain. Gibbs punches it in for a three-yard score. 

Second quarter

End of first quarter: Lions 7, Seahawks 0

8:44 p.m. -- Smith and the Seahawks were flying down the field. The quarterback was airing the ball out and he hit Jaxon Smith-Njigba twice for a total of 11 yards and Jake Bobo for another 11. Smith connected with Metcalf again for a 14 yard gain, but when he was fighting for extra yards he fumbled the ball. The Detroit defender took it back 49 yards and all of a sudden the Lions have the ball in the redzone. 

Lions 7, Seahawks 0

8:33 p.m. -- TOUCHDOWN! -- The Lions are intent on establishing the run. Montgomery gets three straight goal line carries and they go for one yard, two yards and then a one yard score. Detroit gets on the board first. 

8:31 p.m.-- Montgomery picked up 20 yards on his next two carries and the Lions are just marching down the field. Goff fakes it to Jahmyr Gibbs and finds LaPorta for the second time in the first quarter. The QB gives it to Gibbs the next play and he takes it right up the middle for 20 yards. 

8:29 p.m. -- Montgomery got the first touch of the drive and ran it for 11 yards, followed by a four-yard gain. Goff hit Jameson Williams for a first down, but did a nifty little spin move before he threw it. The QB then hit Amon-Ra St. Brown on back-to-back passes, one for a four yard gain and the other for 17 yards. 

8:23 p.m. -- Geno Smith wasted little time targeting his top wide receiver. He found DK Metcalf on the sideline for a 20-yard gain with Metcalf coming down with an impressive snag. 

Smith missed Metcalf his second attempt, Walker lost a yard on a run and Metcalf was then short of a first down. Seattle follows suit and punts the ball back to Detroit. 

8:20 p.m. --  Goff started the drive with a short completion to Sam LaPorta for a one-yard gain. David Montgomery picked up three yards on the ground, but Goff was then sacked for a 14 yard loss. Detroit has to punt after a three and out to start the game. 

8:15 p.m. -- Kickoff is here! Lions won the toss and elected to take the ball! Only the sixth time that head coach Dan Campbell has done this in his four-year tenure with Detroit. 

First quarter

8:10 p.m. -- Legend wide receiver Calvin Johnson is being enshrined in Detroit's Pride of the Lions and there will be quite the group of Lions alumni in the stadium to support him.

8:00 p.m. -- Okay, up close the jerseys do look darker. Offensive Tackle Penei Sewell leads a passionate pregame hype speech for the Lions as we are about 10 minutes from kickoff. 

7:45 p.m. -- Might be nitpicky, by the Lions' jerseys don't look as black as they were pictured. When Detroit took the field, they look more charcoal grey. Still, a great jersey combo for Monday night. 

7:45 p.m. -- Seattle has been without starting running back Kenneth Walker III for the last two weeks. He is active for the game and should get the start in the backfield. 

7:20 p.m. -- Less than an hour before kickoff. During warm-ups veteran quarterbacks Geno Smith and Jared Goff showed mutual respect for one another. 

7 p.m. -- For those wanting to bet on the game, the Lions are four-point favorites at Caesars Sportsbook. Detroit is installed at -220 on the moneyline, while Seattle is the +180 underdog. The point total is set at 47. 

6:45 p.m. -- Inactives for the game are rolling in.

6:30 p.m. -- The Lions are bringing back their black jerseys for this game. Detroit will be in black pants, black jersey and blue helmets, while Seattle wears its white jersey, white pants, dark blue helmet combo. 

 

6:15 p.m. -- Kickoff for the game is still about two hours away, and players have arrived. Thanks to Detroit's Ford Field, weather won't be a factor in the second of Monday night's NFL doubleheader.

Lions schedule 2024

Detroit struggled to get into a rhythm in Week 1 against Los Angeles. The Lions were up 17-3 in the second quarter but couldn't stop the Rams' comeback and were lucky to get a win in overtime.

Detroit was up 16-13 against Tampa Bay the next week but gave up the game-winning touchdown with 34 seconds left. After allowing a first-quarter touchdown to the Cardinals, the Lions' defense prevailed, giving up just six more points the rest of the game to secure a Week 3 win.
