When Sir Alex Ferguson spoke of "knocking Liverpool off their perch", the legendary Manchester United manager's steely singling out of the Anfield club highlighted the intensity of the relationship between two giants of English football.
United surpassed Liverpool's title tally under Ferguson's leadership, although the years since the Scot's departure have been precarious for United in the balance of Premier League power.
Had Liverpool not fallen a point short of Manchester City in the 2021/22 season, Jurgen Klopp's team would have matched United's 20 English top-flight trophies — and Arsenal, with 13 wins, are the only other team in double figures for titles.
Liverpool scored nine without reply against United during a dire 2021/22 season for their familiar enemies. Will it be closer this time around? Here's when the clubs will meet in 2022/23:
🗣️"This is a monstrous day for Manchester United. Losing 5-0 at home to Liverpool."

Liverpool vs. Man United rivalry
This fixture was first played in 1894, although United were known as Newton Heath in each of the five meetings before 1903.
Perhaps the earliest example of a classic between the pair was the FA Cup final in 1977, when United shocked a Liverpool side who had won the league and were about to win the European Cup — the previous incarnation of the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool earned revenge for that defeat by reversing the 2-1 scoreline in the 1983 Milk Cup final, firmly establishing themselves as the most successful team in the top division when they won their 18th title in 1990.

An epic comeback from 3-0 behind gave Liverpool a 3-3 draw at Anfield against United in January 1994, but by that time their opponents had well and truly begun a lengthy period of Premier League domination thanks to Ferguson.
Iconic striker Eric Cantona scored the only goal of the game as United won the FA Cup final between the teams in 1996, and the 12 titles they won under Ferguson between 1994 and 2013 were deeply painful for many viewers on Merseyside.
This is a game that fans particularly cherish winning and a battle between arguably the two grandest heavyweights of the English game. When Liverpool swept to an emphatic Premier League triumph in 2019/20, part of their glee was in leaving United trailing them by a massive 33 points.
Liverpool vs. Man United head-to-head record
United have a marginally better record in this fixture, their 89 wins eclipsing Liverpool by nine victories, with 68 draws.
That gap has been reduced by all of the last five wins in the encounter in the Premier League coming for Liverpool, who have lost only one of their last 12 league games against United.
Mohamed Salah and former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard are the top scorers in the game in recent times, each scoring nine overall against United. Ryan Giggs (above) has made the most appearances, facing Liverpool 48 times during his career-long spell at United.
Liverpool's 5-0 win at Old Trafford in October 2021 was the largest victory in the rivalry since 1946 on an immensely humiliating afternoon for United. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left the club within a month of the defeat.
