It seemed classic Manchester United in 2025, having established a two-goal lead through first-half dominance, only to see it all come crashing down by the end.
With an all-important Europa League semifinal spot seemingly in their grasp, the Red Devils were suddenly trailing by two goals to 10-man Lyon, and the season appeared on the brink of collapsing at the feet of their latest remarkable disaster.
It was then that the unlikeliest of heroes sent Old Trafford into absolute delirium with an extra-time comeback that was reminiscent of the now-distant Sir Alex Ferguson days. Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, playing up front as central strikers, scored goals in the 120th and 121st minute to push Man United dramatically into the competition's final four.
As the full-time whistle blew, it felt a lifetime ago that Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot had given United a two-goal lead by halftime. The hosts were in full control of the match across the first 45 minutes, and came out strong in the second half too, before Alejandro Garnacho's glaring one-on-one miss proved a decisive turning point in the game.
It was then that Lyon began to turn things around, and they wrestled back control of the game across the final 20 minutes. Corentin Tolisso scored in the 71st minute, shortly followed by Nicolas Tagliafico, at which point United were pegged back and the scoreline was level.
The hosts were provided a lifeline as Tolisso was sent off for a harsh second booking, and it all felt comfortable heading into extra time. Little did anyone know the match was about to explode into European lore.
United were stunned as, despite their man advantage, they were suddenly behind two goals in the blink of an eye as Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette struck to put Lyon 4-2 up by halftime of the additional period, and the only glimmer of hope remaining amidst an otherwise disastrous season seemed extinguished.
From there, the unthinkable happened. United were given a lifeline as Bruno Fernandes deposited a penalty in the 114th minute, and United began to pour forward in desperation. As time wound down, Old Trafford was transformed once again into a true Theatre of Dreams as Mainoo and Maguire turned the game on its head in a flash.
A match that will go down in Man United lore sends them into the Europa League semifinals, where they will face Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt who stunned Lazio on penalties despite a second-leg defeat in Italy.
While they remain miles from the heights they feel they should be, a comeback like this on any stage, against any opponent, can be course-altering. With United sitting firmly in the bottom half of the Premier League table and desperate for the financial windfall of a deep European run to provide a platform with which to improve the squad, this result was of critical importance to the club's short-term and long-term future.
For those in attendance at the hallowed ground in Manchester, this memory will live on as a night they shall never forget.

Man United vs. Lyon live updates, highlights from Europa League quarterfinal
FULLTIME: Man United 5 (7-6) 4 Lyon
A truly unbelievable match that has to be seen to believe! What an outrageous finish, as BOTH teams coughed up two-goal leads, and Manchester United win it in classic fashion, with Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire scoring the winning goals just one minute apart, right at the death!
120+1 min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!!! HARRY MAGUIRE HAS JUST WON IT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED! THIS IS INCREDIBLE! THEY'VE WON IT 5-4!
A cross from deep by Casemiro falls right to Maguire's head, and he made no mistake with the finish! What a classic European match, with every twist and turn imaginable!
Now the Red Devils only have to protect this lead through five minutes of stoppage time!

120th min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT?!?!?!?! KOBBIE MAINOO HAS SENT OLD TRAFFORD INTO JUBILATION WITH A LAST-GASP STRIKE OF BRILLIANCE!
He is fed outside the top-left corner of the six-yard box and chops onto his right foot, creating space for the shot across the face of goal which leaves Lucas Perri with no chance but to watch it fly by as he gives it the requisite dive!
VIDEO: Watch Mainoo goal in USA | Watch in UK | Watch in Canada
116th min: Man United have another huge shout for a penalty, as Harry Maguire goes hip-to-hip with Moussa Niakhate chasing a vertical ball and is wrestled down, but the referee once again waves it away! Unlike minutes ago, this one doesn't leave VAR with much of a choice but to wave play on, as while there was clear contact and even a shirt pull, it's not quite clear enough to intervene.
111th min: Chance, Man United! Casemiro goes down under contact outside the top of the six-yard box, causing United players and fans to scream for a foul, but the referee says no! Replay shows there's a real chance of this being a problem for Lyon, as Thiago Almada does swing his boot and contact the Brazilian's foot.
The referee will indeed go over to the monitor for a check...PENALTY! MAN UNITED! It's a bit of a soft one, but that's the right call. United have a lifeline!
Up steps their main man Bruno Fernandes, and...GOAL! MAN UNITED! Lucas Perri dove the correct direction, but Fernandes placed it so that the goalkeeper could not reach it! What an outlandish finish to this match!

In the aftermath, Nicolas Tagliafico is replaced by Duje Caleta-Car.
108th min: PENALTY, LYON! Luke Shaw and Lenny Yoro sandwich Malick Fofana as he enters the penalty area, and the referee points to the spot! Yoro is booked, but the replay shows it was in fact Shaw who clipped Fofana's leg. It's the right call!
Up steps Alexandre Lacazette, and...GOAL! LYON! He sends Andre Onana the wrong way with a cool, slotted finish, and effectively ends the Red Devils' season!
VIDEO: Watch Lyon goal in UK | Watch in Canada
107th min: Rayan Cherki is withdrawn by Paulo Fonseca, and predictably takes his time coming off, which angers Manchester United players, who give him a little shove. He's replaced by Brazil international Abner.
Kickoff of extra-time second half: They're back under way for the final 15 minutes, and Harry Maguire has gone up front to play striker for Man United.
HALFTIME OF EXTRA-TIME: Man United 2 (4-5) 3 Lyon
Man United have completely bottled it! They've gone from 2-0 up to 3-2 down despite holding a man advantage, and the implications of this potential defeat would be extraordinary.
The first 15 minutes of extra-time were so passive from Man United given their man-up situation, and they've been punished for it. What can Ruben Amorim conjure up from here?
105th min: GOAL! LYON! WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT?!?!?! RAYAN CHERKI HAS PUT MAN UNITED'S SEASON ON THE BRINK!!!!!
Nicolas Tagliafico's flick springs Malick Fofana free to charge down the left edge, and as he reaches the top of the penalty area, he's felled by a pair of United defenders, but not before tapping it to Cherki alongside. From there, Lyon's young star does the rest, pinging a left-footed finish across the face of Andre Onana's net and in for a stunning go-ahead goal.

99th min: Man United make another two changes, with Christian Eriksen and young Harry Amass coming on for Patrick Dorgo and Alejandro Garnacho. We'll see how they look formationally after that...
93rd min: Harry Maguire is booked for bundling over Rayan Cherki who had befuddled the defender with a skillful dribble.
Kickoff of extra-time: Lyon take ages to break their huddle, all the while Bruno Fernandes stares down their conversation from afar. Finally, they're ready to return to play after the coin toss.
END OF REGULATION: Man United 2 (4-4) 2 Lyon
We're going to extra-time! Manchester United coughed up a two-goal lead with a disastrous last 20 minutes of the match, as Lyon were by FAR the better team through the final quarter of the match — only to see it come crumbling down as Corentin Tolisso was harshly sent off.
Can Man United take advantage of their man advantage and secure that all-important winning goal, or will Lyon hang on long enough to secure penalties? Could they even boldly go and score a man-down goal perhaps? So many possibilities, as this quarterfinal hangs in the balance!
89th min: RED CARD! LYON! CORENTIN TOLISSO HAS BEEN SENT OFF! He picks up a second yellow card for tripping Lenny Yoro who had gotten by him down the right flank!
That's an incredibly soft decision from the referee, as Tolisso barely brushes the back of Yoro's ankles as the Man United defender faceplants. Tolisso is astonished and walks off befuddled and in disbelief. The most incidental of contact has changed the course of this game, and Lyon will just hope to hang on until penalties at this point!
VIDEO: Watch Tolisso red card in the UK
85th min: It is all Lyon right now, as Rayan Cherki wins a dangerous free-kick just outside the Manchester United penalty area shaded to the left. It's taken by Thiago Almada, who hits the wall, specifically Casemiro.
Mason Mount will come on to play the final few minutes of regulation plus any potential stoppage time, as he comes on to replace Manuel Ugarte. Also entering is Kobbie Mainoo to take over for Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish striker is a massively frustrated figure exiting the pitch, once again without a goal.
Mainoo, incredibly, takes over at central striker for United.
78th min: GOAL! LYON! MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE COUGHED IT UP!
Malick Fofana works a cross to the far post where Ainsley Maitland-Niles heads it back across to Nicolas Tagliafico, who appears to poke it home over the line! Andre Onana scoops the ball out despite appearing to be good on the initial effort, and Lacazette is there to smash it in just to make sure! Tagliafico is credited with the goal, as the ball was definitely in on the initial poke at the near post.
It always felt as if this was the ultimate outcome once the previous goal went in, and it's come to pass!
VIDEO: Watch Lyon goal in USA | Watch in UK | Watch in Canada
75th min: Chance, Lyon! The French club has full control of this match as Man United are on their heels! First Malick Fofana has a rip which pings the head of a fallen Lenny Yoro, before a follow-up blast from the right flank by Ainsley Maitland-Niles forces an awkward save by Andre Onana who dives past the ball but manages to sort out a punch nonetheless.
Yoro is down in the aftermath of the play and needs treatment, as he took the full force of the initial effort straight to his noggin, from very close range. Old Trafford falls nervously quiet but eventually Yoro is up and walks off under his own power, appearing for now as though he can continue.
71st min: GOAL! LYON! THE VISITORS AREN'T OUT OF THE TIE JUST YET! Off a free-kick, Corentin Tolisso heads home past Andre Onana!
The United goalkeeper had no chance as the initial delivery pinged off three different heads with the former Barcelona defender being the last. After Casemiro fails to clear the initial delivery, it comes to Clinton Mata, then Alexandre Lacazette, and finally the goal scorer! GAME ON!
VIDEO: Watch Lyon goal in USA | Watch in UK | Watch in Canada
64th min: Nicolas Tagliafico is the latest Lyon player into the book, and he too would be suspended for the first leg of a potential semifinal.
Malick Fofana enters for Lyon to replace the quiet Georges Mikautadze, who had a great first leg but has been invisible tonight.
58th min: Rasmus Hojlund flubs a shot and reacts angrily by ninja kicking the post and letting out an expletive. He's been quite the frustrated figure over the last few months.
54th min: Chance, Lyon! The visitors aren't going away just yet! Standing on the penalty spot, Corentin Tolisso gets a shot away on the turn but Andre Onana is once again up to the task! A very strong save down to his right, and the Man United goalkeeper is making up for his errors in the first leg!

— Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) April 17, 2025
Lyon make a pair of changes, with Alexandre Lacazette coming on for Jordan Veretout in an attacking change, while Paul Akouokou exits and is replaced by American international Tanner Tessmann.
50th min: Chance, Man United! ALEJANDRO GARNACHO IS COMPLETELY FREE ON GOAL BUT BUNGLES IT! He is sent free one-on-one with Clinton Mata chasing a long ball, and beats the Lyon defender to it before chopping onto his right to send Mata sailing into the setting sun. That leaves the Argentine all alone on goal with only Lucas Perri to beat, but he can't come up with the goods and hits it right at the goalkeeper!
In the aftermath, out of sheer frustration, he drags back a Lyon player and picks up a yellow card. What a promising moment only to be wrecked by a failure to finish!

48th min: Chance, Man United! A free-kick is sent from the top-left corner of the penalty area to the front of goal where Casemiro meets it with his head, only to redirect the ball wide of the near post. The offside flag goes up anyways, nullifying the chance entirely.
2nd half kickoff: The players are back out for the final 45 minutes, and the ball is rolling as the referee's whistle blows! United were by far the better side in the first half, so what will Paulo Fonseca's Lyon bring to turn the tide?
Interestingly, there's a change at the back for Man United as Luke Shaw comes on for Noussair Mazraoui. You wonder if that's a forced change or a planned one. Lyon were very quickly out of the tunnel, well before United's squad, but they do not have any changes just yet.
HALFTIME: Man United 2 (4-2) Lyon
Manchester United are absolutely deserving of their two-goal lead, as they were clearly the better side in that first half. The Red Devils completely bossed the match, and could have had even more than their pair of goals if they had finished a few more chances.
Lyon were exceedingly poor, unable to influence the match at all outside of the one Rayan Cherki chance which saw Andre Onana up to the task. The Premier League giants have just 45 minutes to see out to keep this season's European salvation alive!
45+1 min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! DIOGO DALOT HAS MAN UNITED WITH ONE FOOT IN THE SEMIFINAL!
He wrestles for control of a long ball with World Cup winner Nicolas Tagliafico inside the top-right corner of the penalty area, and wins the duel. With the Argentine on the turf, he slips but still manages to poke a smart finish past Lucas Perri and into the net. A goal out of nothing!
Lyon players are incensed that Dalot was not whistled for a foul for the physical play, but the goal stands after surviving a quick VAR check!
45th min: Corentin Tolisso is booked for tripping Alejandro Garnacho as Man United were on the counter. Garnacho probably didn't have to go down, but being still in his own half and a long way to go, he decided drawing a yellow card was the better option.
39th min: Chance, Man United! Bruno Fernandes fancies himself in this match for sure! The Man United playmaker fizzes a howitzer that is curling towards the top-right corner, but has just a tiny bit too much bend and ends up just wide.
36th min: Chance, Man United! OH MY BRUNO FERNANDES, HE'S STRUCK THE POST WITH WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A PUSKAS AWARD WINNER! WOW!
Somehow, miraculously, the Portuguese star takes a ball over his shoulder and produces an unfathomable volley, catching the flight of the ball with his foot and cannoning it on goal, but it smashes the crossbar and fails to find the back of the net! What could have been!
VIDEO: Watch Bruno Fernandes chance in UK
32nd min: Chance, Lyon! A HUGE SAVE BY ANDRE ONANA DENIES RAYAN CHERKI! The Lyon playmaker dazzles by charging diagonally through the United midfield and into the penalty area, where he strikes with his left and looks for the back of the net.
He should have done better, but give Onana plenty of credit for making a smart reflex save, diving down to his right to parry away the effort!
VIDEO: Watch Rayan Cherki chance in UK
28th min: Lyon have been poor so far overall, but Ainsley Maitland-Niles just nutmegged Casemiro into another dimension as he dribbled forward on the ball, and it was sensational.

26th min: Alejandro Garnacho makes a 60+ yard run, only to take a poor shot at the end of it when he had Rasmus Hojlund free to pass to if he'd looked for it. Hojlund is visibly frustrated, but United get a corner out of it, which results in a Harry Maguire header that deflects off Corentin Tolisso and goes out for...a goal kick, the referee says? Pretty clear mistake there from the Swiss official.
22nd min: Chance, Lyon! The visitors have finally started to influence the game in their own right, and Thiago Almada rips a vicious shot that's blocked by Harry Maguire. It had enough pace to leave the United defender in a heap on the turf for a moment, but he gets up and recovers.
On the ensuing set-piece, Andre Onana isn't convincing with his punch, but he does enough to turn the ball awkwardly around for another corner, which is then cleared before a wayward shot from distance isn't remotely close to troubling the hosts.
18th min: The first yellow card of the match is shown to French veteran Jordan Veretout who drags back Bruno Fernandes. Fortunately for Lyon, Veretout is not one of the seven visitors at risk of a suspension with a yellow card, but that only makes a difference if they manage to go through.
16th min: Chance, Man United! Casemiro seems to have worked the space for an open effort on goal, as he rifles a shot through the legs of Moussa Niakhate, but Lucas Perri makes an absolutely brilliant save diving down low to his right!
There has not been a spirited response to the opening goal from Lyon, and United remain the far more incisive side to this point early in the match.
10th min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! Manuel Ugarte puts the Red Devils ahead! It always felt likely that they would score first if they could sort out their struggles in the final third, and Alejandro Garnacho is the one to unlock the Lyon back line!
Bruno Fernandes finds the Argentine who gets to the byline on the right edge of the penalty area and delivers a pinpoint diagonal cutback to the penalty spot where Ugarte was waiting to bury the chance!

9th min: It really is astonishing how easy it's been for Manchester United to maraud their way into the final third, at which point their brains seem to instantly melt into a puddle.
Bruno Fernandes shakes a Lyon player on the ball and finds his way with acres of space to run onto, but as soon as he nears the top of the penalty area, he freezes and Corentin Tolisso picks his pocket from behind.
4th min: There's been good attacking intent from Man United early in this game, but per usual, they run out of ideas as soon as they enter the final third. Lenny Yoro is given acres of space to run through midfield on one occasion, for example, and as he enters the attacking third, his indecision results in an awkward slide as he delivers a meek pass.

30 mins to kickoff: Plenty has been made about Manchester United's squad and the lack of quality available for selection by Ruben Amorim. They can't do anything about that today, but former United players Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have their say about where the Red Devils can go this summer and in the future.

45 mins to kickoff: Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca is not having the best time in his first few months at the club. Hired in late January shortly after being sacked at AC Milan, Fonseca was hit with an astonishing nine month touchline ban in Ligue 1 play after aggressively confronting a referee after a match, which keeps him from being in the club's dressing room as well. He has labeled the ban "unbelievable" and says "they want to make an example of me."
Fonseca is allowed to be on the touchline for European matches, as the suspension only applies to French domestic play, so he will be in charge as long as they are alive in the Europa League.

1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in, and neither side has gone for any surprises whatsoever, as both clubs release XI's exactly as predicted. Andre Onana starts in goal again for Manchester United despite heavy criticism of his first leg performance, while Lyon boss Paulo Fonseca makes no changes to his XI from last week's meeting.
1 hour 15 mins to kick: Lyon have found significant success as an Island of Misfit Toys this season, compiling a number of recognisable players cast away by bigger clubs and looking to rehab their profile. The likes of Corentin Tolisso Alexandre Lacazette, Nemanja Matic, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Nicolas Tagliafico, and you can even throw in former Aston Villa, Roma, and Fiorentina midfielder Jordan Veretout.
The key is pairing those individuals alongside blossoming young stars, which has led to the successful development of Rayan Cherki, Thiago Almada, Georges Mikautadze, and Tanner Tessmann.
1 hour 30 mins to kick: The player to watch on Lyon tonight is Rayan Cherki. He has a very Adel Taarabt air about him — brilliant on his best day and putting up insane numbers, but there are rumblings of character issues and a propensity to ignore the manager's instructions.
Given his explosive statistical profile, there are certain to be big clubs circling for his signature this summer, and Manchester United's front-row seat to his performances will certainly leave them amongst those circling.
If you are watching Man United vs. Lyon today, keep your eyes locked on Rayan Cherki.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: It's well-known how big of a game this is for Manchester United, given that their entire season hinges on their Europa League campaign. Win, and they reach a European semifinal. Lose, and they have nothing to play for and nothing to savour.

2 hours to kickoff: While Joshua Zirkzee hasn't exactly lit up the Premier League in his first season with Manchester United, the Dutchman was a positive injection of life off the bench in the first leg, and his loss to injury is a major blow.
Rasmus Hojlund has been stuck in a truly horrific second-half slump since the turn of the calendar year, with just one lone goal across all competitions in 2025. It's not that he's failing to finish chances — he's not even getting shots off. Incredibly, Hojlund has accumulated just 3.7 xG across over 1,600 Premier League minutes this season, taking just 23 total shots in 27 appearances. That cannot continue if Man United wish to remain a Europa League participant.

Man United vs. Lyon lineups, team news
Manchester United got word over the weekend that they would be without Joshua Zirkzee for the rest of the season after the forward fell victim to a hamstring injury over the weekend against Newcastle. They are also down Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo for the remainder of the campaign.
While Altay Bayinder started in goal on Saturday after Andre Onana's error-filled Europa nightmare, Ruben Amorim confirmed Onana would regain his place for this match.
Kobbie Mainoo has returned from injury with two substitute appearances and could be in line for a return to the starting XI, while Casemiro could also return after being left on the bench against Newcastle. Matthijs de Ligt is out for at least a few more months, as Amorim confirmed he is managing pain in his ankle.
Man United starting lineup (3-4-2-1): Onana (GK) — Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro — Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu — Garnacho, Fernandes — Hojlund.
Man United subs: Bayindir (GK), Heaton (GK), Kukonki, Amass, Kamason, Shaw, Lindelof, Eriksen, Moorhouse, Mainoo, Mount.
Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca will have his full squad available for selection as they are not under any fitness pressure at the moment.
The only concern is prolific forward Georges Mikautadze, who was withdrawn late in their weekend win over Auxerre with a knock, but he seems to be ready to go. He should start over Alexandre Lacazette up front if fully fit, with the Frenchman used more in league play.
The key to Lyon's lineup is Rayan Cherki who is a passing wizard and scored the late equalizer in the first leg against Man United.
Lyon starting lineup (4-3-3): Perri (GK) — Maitland-Niles, Mata, Niakhate, Tagliafico — Veretout, Akouokou, Tolisso — Cherki, Mikautadze, Almada.
Lyon subs: Diarra (GK), Descamps (GK), Abner, Caleta-Car, Kumbedi, Omari, Matic, Tessmann, Lacazette, Fofana.
