Why does Luka Doncic's knee keep bleeding? Medical expert debunks conspiracy theories about Lakers star's injury image

Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic, one of the biggest stars in the NBA, has been crucial to the Los Angeles Lakers this season. He played a key role in the Lakers' win against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 2 of their series.

LeBron James is yet to find his best form, but Doncic has been shining through and through. The Slovenian has taken the centre stage on multiple occasions for his team this campaign.

Fans, though, might have noticed the recurring bleeding on Doncic's knee. The issue has been going on since 2023, and several theories have emerged as potential explanations.

In this day and age, it doesn't take long for rumors to percolate on social media. Hence, it's better to hear from a medical expert on such an issue, and sports medicine doctor Brian Sutterer MD has shared some insightful knowledge with fans on the topic.

Medical expert speaks on Luka Doncic's knee bleeding

Sutterer addressed different possibilities, including that there might be a use of a syringe to inject or remove fluid from Doncic's knee. However, Sutterer reckons such a wound would last for a short time, and the blood will clot quickly. He also thinks the medical team would use a band-aid to stop the bleeding in that instance.

It won't suddenly start bleeding after a while in the middle of a game. Instead, he thinks it's down to Doncic's playing style. The area of the knee in concern doesn't have a lot of muscle padding and could get repeatedly cut open due to trauma and friction.

He said, "I think he's just prone to a playing style that causes this area to get repetitively torn, cut, injured, and then develop the bleeding. You're not gonna take him back to the locker room in the middle of the game and try and pull him out to do any cleaning. In last night's game, it actually looked like he came back in the second half and had cleaner compression garments. So, they probably put some dressing on it, they covered it up, they kept it clean and dry. But don't be surprised if we see this come back in the future."

Doncic and the LA Lakers return to action on April 25, taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 3 of the playoff series. After losing the first game, the Lakers bounced back to win Game 2 94-85 and tie the series 1-1.

Luka Doncic left his mark in Game 2, scoring 31 points, managing nine assists, and 12 rebounds during the game.
