Top contenders to win 2025 Stanley Cup
Edmonton nearly brought home its first Stanley Cup since 1990 last season before falling to Florida in seven games in the final.
Oilers
Captain Connor McDavid enters his 10th season still in search of that first Stanley Cup. Despite losing to the Panthers, McDavid took home his first Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the NHL Playoffs.
McDavid has led the NHL in points in five of the last eight years. He finished third in points last season with 132.
McDavid's running mate Leon Draisaitl returns after signing the richest extension of the salary cap era at $112 million over eight years. Left wing Zach Hyman is also back after leading the Oilers with 54 goals last season. Edmonton added another goal-scoring sniper in Jeff Skinner from Buffalo.
Stuart Skinner has given the Oilers a reliable backstop for the first time in years. The 25-year-old goaltender finished with a record of 36-16-5 and a 2.62 goals against average (GAA) last season.
Panthers
Florida claimed its first Stanley Cup in the franchise's 30th season. The offensive firepower remains intact with Sam Reinhart (57 goals), Carter Verhaeghe (34), Matthew Tkachuk (26) and Aleksander Barkov (23) all back in the fold.
Defenseman Gustav Forsling led the NHL with a +56 plus/minus rating, but the Panthers lost their best blueliner in Brandon Montour to the Kraken.
Sergei Bobrovsky is back between the pipes as one of the league's best goalies. "Bob" was 36-17-4 with a 2.37 GAA last season.
Stars
Dallas features some of the best young forwards in the NHL. Wyatt Johnston, 21, led the Stars with 32 goals last season.
Johnston is expected to take over for the retired Joe Pavelski on the first line, joining left wing Jason Robertson (29 goals) and center Roope Hintz (30 goals).
Logan Stankoven, also 21, made his NHL debut last February and registered eight points in his first six games.
Dallas excelled on special teams last year. The Stars were successful on 82% of their penalty kills and converted 24.2% of power plays, with both achieving top-10 ratings in the NHL.
Top-tier goaltender Jake Oettinger is coming off a 35-14-4 season with a 2.72 GAA.
