There is a lot of bad blood between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia dating back to their amateur days. With a series between the two at 3-3, the young fighters compete for the first time as pros on April 20. On the line will be Haney's WBC super lightweight title.
The fight goes down in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY with DAZN broadcasting the event worldwide.
Haney has held gold since 2019 when he beat Zaur Abdullaev for the interim WBC lightweight belt. Eventually promoted to full-time status, he fought George Kambosos Jr. in Australia in June 2022, beating the Aussie to win the WBA, IBF, WBO, and Ring belts to become the undisputed champion. A rematch clause forced Haney to fight Kambosos again, where he once again outpointed him in his backyard. After that,
Haney beat former lightweight king Vasiliy Lomachenko in a close contest to retain the belts. The 25-year-old then moved up in weight in December and beat Regis Prograis to win the WBC super lightweight title.

“Ryan’s been talking so much, I feel like it’s been motivating me even more, just to end him and get him out of boxing, because he’s not taking the sport serious like he should, because he’s not being a good role model to the people that look up to him," Haney said via Boxing Scene. "He’s got his platform, but he’s not making the best of it.”
Garcia turned pro in 2016. He stopped Luke Campbell for the interim WBC lightweight title, but injuries and mental health issues halted his momentum. After beating Emmanuel Tagoe and Javier Fortuna, Garcia faced Gervonta Davis in a catchweight money fight, getting stopped in seven rounds. After the Davis fight, Garcia got a new trainer in Derrick James, removing Joe Goossen from the picture.
"KingRy" beat Oscar Duarte back in December via knockout. There has been some concerns regarding Garcia's status for the fight following controversial outbursts on and off social media. The New York Athletic Commission wanted him to take a mental evaluation test.
For now, the fight is still on.
“For those who are wondering if Ryan will be ready. I’m here to tell you. He will be more than ready,” said Ryan’s father Henry Garcia on Instagram. “The one you need to worry about is Devin Haney. I keep telling you guys that once Devin feels Ryan’s power, he is going to wish he hadn’t said yes to this matchup. There’s a saying that goes like this. ‘You can run, but you can’t hide.’”
