As the holiday season approaches, holiday commercials are starting to air during sporting events, with some big names being featured every year.

So far, an NFL-focused commercial stands out as one of the most frequently aired so far, and it even includes a famous football family.

The Watt family takes center stage in the first big commercial of this holiday season, as J.J., T.J., Derek and their parents all star in Dick's Sporting Goods' Christmas commercial. The ad also includes parodies of famous Christmas movie scenes to get people in the mood for the season.

Here is an inside look at the Watt family commercial.

Dick's J.J. Watt commercial

Dick's Sporting Goods released a holiday commercial starring the Watt family, titled "A Watt Holiday Classic. The 90-second ad includes callbacks to various popular Christmas movies, including:

  • "Home Alone"
  • "Love Actually"
  • "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation"

In the commercial, the Watt family goes to Dick's Sporting Goods for their Christmas shopping, but they forget retired NFL star J.J. Watt in the store. The scenario pays homage to "Home Alone," with retired NFL player Derek Watt being the one to tell his parents that they forgot his brother.

While alone in the store, J.J. is shown playing around in the store using various sporting equipment.

The commercial also includes parodies of the department store Santa scene from "Elf," the note card scene from "Love Actually" and the Christmas lights scene from "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."

Since his retirement after the 2022 season, J.J. Watt has been featured in several commercials, from Peloton to Gatorade. Still, this commercial for Dick's Sporting Goods should stand the test of time as one of his most memorable.

Between the Watt family, the Kelce family and the Manning family, NFL families are coveted among companies looking for a different angle of NFL sponsorships. This is unlikely to be the only commercial involving a famous NFL family this holiday season.
