Manchester Roosters? NRL club eyeing takeover of Super League team image

The Sydney Roosters are reportedly considering the possibility of buying a Super League team.

According to Sydney Morning Herald journalist Michael Chammas, the Tricolours have discussed investment options if the NRL ends up buying into the England-based competition.

Discussions come amid the NRL's desire to continue its global expansion.

The acquisition of the Super League could allow for easier player movement, with an established, consistent international rugby league season.

This has piqued the interest of the Roosters, who may look to buy an entire team.

"I can tell you that Nick Politis (Roosters chairman) and Sydney Roosters have had some conversations with the NRL," Chammas told 100% Footy.

"They like the point of the NRL buying into it (Super League) to the point where they’ve actually discussed the possibility that if the NRL do get involved, they want to look at buying a team."

In particular, the Roosters are eyeing off the Salford Red Devils.

The Greater Manchester-based club have had recent financial and ownership problems, which have seen them release and sell multiple players.

Their takeover by a Swiss consortium went through at the beginning of this year, although the club have failed to pay wages to its players and staff on-time for the second time this season.

Should Salford's financial problems continue, it will make them a prime purchasing candidate.

The Roosters are reportedly intrigued by the potential of relocating to team to the city of Manchester and rebranding them as the 'Manchester Roosters'.

This could also allow the 15-time premiership winners to establish a strong pathways system for English players.

"There’s been talks before about London and whether or not they’d be for sale, but the team I’m hearing at the moment are Salford," Chammas added.

"I hear the Roosters are eyeing Salford, and looking at potentially rebranding them as the ‘Manchester Roosters’ if the NRL does take control of Super League.

"We know what they’re doing at the moment in LA. They’ve got a team over there, the LA Roosters, and that wouldn’t be in the same realm as this.

"This is a Super League club, and potentially rebranding them. Salford at the moment are struggling financially.

"They (the Roosters) think because it (Salford) is close to Manchester, they can play there, rebrand the team and then you have that pathway for players to come from England straight into the Roosters’ system. It could be a good move."
