Gillespie's reign as the red ball coach lasted for just over 7 months as he had taken up the job in April while Kirsten was made the white-ball coach.

The Aussie coach earlier in October had led the side to a Test win at home after over 3.5 years as Pakistan won the home series against England after going 0-1 down after the first Test.

He also coached the ODI and T20I side in the tour to Australia as the interim coach after the South African's departure in October where he won them the ODI series as well.

Why did Jason Gillespie resign as the Pakistan's Test team coach?

The 49-year-old was supposed to join Pakistan's team in South Africa as they play the T20I series which will be followed by two Tests, however, on the night of December 12, reports emerged that he would not be travelling after a potentially disrespectful treatment by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Following are some of the reasons for his resignation:

  • Sacking of the assistant coach: It is being reported that Tim Nielsen, who was his assistant coach was set to be sacked after PCB decided not to renew his contract. This reportedly happened without any discussion with the Aussie legend, who came to know about this decision from the PCB from Nielsen himself.

"Tim Nielsen was told that his services were no longer required and I had absolutely zero communication from anyone about that," told Gillespie to ABC Sports in an interview

The Australian's resignation has come just months after South Africa legend Gary Kirsten quit the job as the white-ball coach of Pakistan due to unprofessional treatment of foreign coaches.

  • Lack of power in the team selection: Another reason for him quitting the role is due to having no say in the team's selections, which have been handled by Aaqib Javed who is currently the white ball coach as well as the selector for the Test team. It is also being told that he was not consulted when PCB decided to axe Babar Azam from the squad after the 1st Test vs England.

Gillespie had also recently said that he only saw himself as just a mentor to the side due to a lack of power in team selections.

"You want to be able to have clear communication with all stakeholders, with selectors, for instance, knowing what the team is as head coach well before the game, or before at least the day before the game,” he said.

  • Diminished role in the team: The Aussie also thought that his role diminished after things started to go well.

"I was basically hitting catches and that was about it. Having to ask the selectors when they are going to share what the squad is...those sorts of things just make you think, are they really interested in having you on board?" he added.

Who will replace Jason Gillespie as Pakistan's red-ball coach?

Aqib Javed has been named as the interim coach for the South Africa tour where they will play two Tests and six white-ball matches and could very well take up the job full time soon.
