Apart from the cricketing action, though, something cricketing bodies across the world have been attempting to change is the time taken to complete a T20 match. Originally designed to be completed within three hours, many IPL matches go on for close to four hours or more.
The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) recently introduced a 'red card' law to combat this, but what has the BCCI done this season?
Why are so many IPL captains being fined? Explaining BCCI's over-rate rule
According to the Code of Conduct for IPL 2024, fielding teams must achieve a minimum over rate of 14.11 overs per hour, that is, the entire innings of 20 overs must be completed within 90 minutes. There are allowances made for time-outs, injuries and player/umpire reviews.
If a fielding team is found to be behind the over rate at the start of the final over, they are required to place an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle, meaning only four can be stationed outside. There are also fines to be paid by the captain/team in case the team does not finish on time, according to the following scheme:
Violation | Punishment |
---|---|
First offence by the team in the season | Captain fined Rs 12 lakh |
Second offence by the team of the season | Captain fined Rs 24 lakh + Other team members fined Rs 6 lakh or 25% of match fee (lesser amount) |
Third offence or more by the team of the season | Captain fined Rs 30 lakh & banned for next match + Other team members fined Rs 12 lakh or 50% of match fee (lesser amount) |
