Which players should LSG buy in the IPL 2025 auction?

Now that we know the retained players, let’s take a look at potential targets for LSG to consider at the auction:

1. Mitchell Starc

Mitchell Starc can be LSG's spearhead pacer, heading into the new season. His ability to steer the team out of pressure situations can boost the confidence of young Indian bowlers like Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan.

2. Phil Salt

Phil Salt could be the perfect solution to LSG's opening woes, replacing the released Quinton de Kock. With QdK entering the twilight of his career, Salt can be considered as a long-term option.

The Englishman would not be retained at the auction table by his former franchise Kolkata, who are out of retention slabs. The Lucknow-based outfit could thus be tempted to go after Salt, who is the back of winning the title in 2024.

3. Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer offers LSG the experienced Indian batting option in the middle-order. With hard hitters like Nicholas Pooran around, Shreyas can play the role of an anchor, substituting the released KL Rahul in that sense.

His ability to play as per the situation in quite underrated. With 69 Crores left in the purse, Shreyas could be one of LSG management's go-to targets at the auction.

4. Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar, with his solid off-spin bowling and more than decent batting skills, could offer LSG balance in both departments at number 7. He can be eyed as the perfect replacement to the released Krunal Pandya.

However, Sundar's price point could be a concern for LSG, with competitors having the power to outbid them.

5. Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant could be one of LSG's prime targets at the auction table. The RPSG-owned franchise have one of the higher purses remaining at the IPL 2025 mega auction.

While they would face stiff competition from Bengaluru or Punjab, the Lucknow-based outfit could eye Pant with all their arrows. He also provides them with the captaincy option, following the release of KL Rahul.

6. Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock could be an ideal addition to LSG's squad. The veteran Protean has been a part of the franchise for the last three years. If not RTM, they could even buy him from the auction table.

While QdK's age is not in his favour anymore, his invaluable experience more than makes up for it. The southpaw has scored over 900 runs for LSG in just 30 appearances. He could be one to watch out for if Sanjeev Goenka opts for a homecoming.

Which players will LSG sign using RTM cards?

LSG has one Right to Match (RTM) card left, which they can use on capped players only. Two candidates stand out for LSG's RTM options:

1. Marcus Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis was drafted by LSG among the first three players ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. Having been a certain match-winner for the side, the management could be keen to buy him back at the auction table. However, Stoinis is expected to fetch a ransom at the mega auction, which could affect LSG's strategy for the RTM.

2. Krunal Pandya

Krunal Pandya has been pivotal to LSG's journey beyond the group stages in IPL 2022 and 2023. The experienced all-rounder could come cheaper compared to his counterparts at the auction, which could be a massive advantage to LSG's RTM strategy.

Not only has Krunal bowled efficiently, but he has been very handy with the bat too. His role as a floater in the batting order is well-established for a player of his calibre. Moreover, the elder Pandya can bowl both in the powerplay and can handle the pressure of the middle-overs, alongside Ravi Bishnoi.
