The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicked off last month, and the annual festival of cricket has served up some fantastic cricketing action so far. As usual, there have been some tight finishes, as well as excellent individual performances.

On Thursday, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) faced-off in a crucial fixture at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala as they both knew the loser of this match would be eliminated from the race for the playoffs.
Hailstones in Dharamshala - Will RCB crash out of IPL 2024 if the match is abandoned?
PBKS won the toss and elected to field first. Rookie pacer Vidwath Kaverappa made an impression early on, as he got rid of both Faf du Plessis and Will Jacks. With RCB at 119/3 in 10 overs, the players went off the field as rain started to fall, along with some potentially dangerous hailstones.
If the match is abandoned, RCB and PBKS will earn a point each, but will that be enough for them to qualify?

That situation will see both teams sit on 9 points after 12 matches, meaning both of them can reach a maximum of 13 points if they win both their remaining games. KKR and RR are already on 16 points, and SRH are on 14. If the game is abandoned, they will be eliminated if any one of CSK, DC or LSG (all on 12 pts) wins even one match.
As DC and LSG are set to face off on May 14, one of them will win at least one match if the game is completed. Therefore, if this match is abandoned, RCB's only hope of qualification comes if the DC-LSG match ends without a result, and both those teams along with CSK lose all their remaining matches. It would mean they are practically eliminated, even if not mathermatically.
