At UFC 285, Alexa Grasso pulled off the ultimate upset when she dethroned the mighty Valentina Shevchenko to win the UFC flyweight title. Now, the UFC takes over Las Vegas with an epic rematch for the belt on Mexican Independence Day. Will it be repeat or revenge at Noche UFC on September 16?
Noche UFC takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and airs on ESPN+ in the U.S. The event, which is a Fight Night, is getting PPV-level treatment with a title fight -- a throwback to years past.
Grasso turned pro in 2012 and joined the UFC in 2016. The former Invicta FC fighter is 8-3 inside the octagon and was on a four-fight win streak when she faced Shevchenko in March. During their fight, Grasso caught a spinning Shevchenko and locked in a choke, submitting her in the fourth round to become the first woman from Mexico to hold UFC gold.
Competing on Mexican Independence Day, Grasso, the underdog in both the first bout and this one, will look to prove she deserves to hold gold and be a leading figure in the UFC.

“Mexican Independence Day means to fight for your dreams,” said Grasso via Sports Illustrated. “My goal is to inspire, especially young women. I want to leave a mark and show that, with enough discipline, you can reach your dreams. I’m fighting for my dreams in the main event… Our fight, it wasn’t a mistake. I’m going to prove that when we fight again.”
A multi-time Muay Thai gold medalist, Shevchenko turned pro in 2004. She joined the UFC in 2015 and was 12-2 in the octagon before the Grasso fight. Losing against Amanda Nunes in 2017, the Kyrgyzstanian went on a nine-fight win streak that saw her win and defend the UFC flyweight title seven times, dominating everyone in her path.
Holding various striking records, the intimidating Shevchenko looks to bring back that frightening persona that struck fear in the hearts of her opponents at Noche UFC.
“There’s only one [way it plays out],” Shevchenko told Low Kick MMA via MMA Mania. “I go in there for the victory. I go there to destroy my opponent. I go there [not to] play. I go there not to joke around. I go there to take what is mine and show not the best version, [but] the greatest version of me.”
