The Purple Cap is awarded to a player with the most wickets at the end of an IPL season. Over the years, bowlers have showcased their skills and bagged the award, irrespective of how their team performed during the season.

However, Kaif believes the bowler with the most wickets at the end of a season is not necessarily the best in the competition. Here's more on why the former Indian cricketer believes IPL rules must be changed for the award.

Why does Mohammad Kaif want the IPL to change the rules for the Purple Cap in IPL?

Kaif claimed that the current rules for the Purple Cap award are unfair for bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah. Check out his tweet below.

Speaking on the social media platform X, Kaif said, "I am not happy with the rules for the Purple Cap because it's unfair for bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Sunil Narine and Rashid Khan who haven't won the award in the IPL history."

Kaif further added that batsmen come prepared against the likes of Bumrah as they know how dangerous he can be with the ball.

"Because batsmen come prepared against bowlers like Bumrah. They do their homework and come out to play with the mindset that we can't throw our wicket to him."

Kaif also mentioned that players like Bumrah don't get too many wickets as batsmen are afraid to take on the star bowler, thus playing him carefully.

"The dominance that Bumrah has with the ball stays in every batsman's mind. That's why Bumrah hardly gets to win the Purple Cap, as the award is all about who takes the most wickets."

He further suggested changes in the rule which he feels will be an ideal criterion to judge a bowler's performance across the entire season.

"There should be a few changes in the rule, like how many boundaries you have conceded? How many sixes have you conceded? What is your economy? People with an economy above 10 are still getting shouts for the Purple Cap," he concluded.
