Adam Azim came through a test of nerve and temperament as he battered veteran former world champion Sergey Lipinets to a ninth-round stoppage at Wembley Arena.

Rising super lightweight star Azim, now 13-0 with 10 wins inside the distance, did not lose a round against a seasoned world-level campaigner, although he became his own worst enemy after dropping Lipinets (18-4-1, 13 KOs) with a left hook in round three.

Azim was twice deducted points for low blows and looked in danger of errantly punching his way towards a disqualification.

Upon the advice of trainer Shane McGuigan, Azim switched his attacks more consistently upstairs and a battered and bloodied Lipinets unravelled under an uppercut assault, with the action waved off after 33 seconds of round nine.

Domestic rival Dalton Smith burnished his own unblemished record with a one-round blowout against overmatched Frenchman Walid Ouizza to lift Azim's old European title last weekend and talk of a huge all-British showdown will only grow louder after Azim's latest emphatic triumph. "Dalton Smith, you better be watching because you ain't that good, my friend," he said afterwards "When I do fight him, I'll teach him a lesson."

Lipinets started in organised fashion with his hands high and jabbing to the body. Azim scored regularly enough, though, and just when it looked like he needed to land something with a bit more authority, he left the Kazakh flat on his back.

Inside the final minute of round three Lipinets chased the younger man in an ungainly fashion and shipped a short left hook to the temple that took his legs from under him. He rose groggily and utilised all his experience to reach the end of the round.

Azim landed a peach of a left uppercut on the inside as he located an irresistible rhythm in round four. Lipinets' high guard was increasingly penetrable. The 35-year-old got some respite when he was allowed time to recover from a low blow that saw Azim deducted his first point.

A ragged left hook almost resulted in Lipinets swinging himself off his feet and a right uppercut that snapped his head back in round five did little for his equilibrium. Nevertheless, Azim was threatening to become the architect of his own downfall as Lipinetes was granted another break for a low blow and referee Steve Gray admonished the home fighter.

It was to the youngster's credit that he did not lose his rhythm in the next session, with the uppercut through the middle working well. Lipinets snaked in a fine left hook to the liver during the final 30 seconds and he needed to make that more than a fleeting success.

Azim elected to meet fire with fire, planting his head on Lipinets shoulder and banging away on the inside, although the upshot was another low blow and another point off. Team Azim decided enough was enough in terms of body shots and the eighth was a painful ordeal for Lipinets, bleeding from the nose and unable to avoid his opponent's brutal honey punch that eventually brought the end.

Round nine opened with an Azim combination that was almost all right uppercuts and most of them landed. It looked like something out of a Rocky movie but it was a painful reality for the brave Lipinets and referee Gray waved it off after one clean headshot too many.

On the undercard, Scottish cruiserweight prospect Scott Forrest was stunned as the heavy-hitting Aurel Ignat shuddered him with big left hooks to pour on the pressure and claim a first-round stoppage. Forrest, whose previous bout against Deevorn Miller was only three weeks ago, slips to 7-1.

Another of Boxxer's rising stars on a quick turnaround was more successful. Callum Simpson stopped the awkward and unorthodox Elvis Ahorgah in five to retain his Commonwealth super middleweight crown.
