On Friday, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Delhi Capitals (DC) faced off in match 26 of the 2024 IPL season at the Ekana Stadium, with the away side in particular, desperate for a win.

LSG won the toss and chose to bat. They lost a couple of early wickets in the form of Quinton de Kock and Devdutt Padikkal, before Kuldeep Yadav ripped through the middle order to leave them at 94/7. A superb recovery from Ayush Badoni (55*) and Arshad Khan (20*) took them to 167.

In reply, DC lost David Warner in the fourth over, but debutant Jake Fraser-McGurk (55) and Rishabh Pant (41) put on 77 for the third wicket to put the visitors on track towards a six-wicket victory in 18.1 overs.

Why did Rishabh Pant argue with umpire over DRS call?

During the first innings, there was some controversy regarding an umpiring decision. In the 4th over, Ishant Sharma bowled a delivery down the leg side to Devdutt Padikkal, which was signalled as a wide. The decision was sent to the third umpire on the grounds of a player review, and the decision was upheld, meaning Delhi Capitals lost one of their two player reviews.

However, as the third umpire reviewed the footage, DC captain Rishabh Pant could be heard on the stump mic telling on-field umpire Rohan Pandit, "Ump, ump, I did not review that." Thereafter, he was involved in a lengthy discussion with the official before carrying on with the game.

Television cameras captured Pant making the 'T' signal with his arms for a player review, but as ventured by the commentators on the broadcast, he appeared to be asking a fielder at a distance whether he should review the decision or not, which may have been interpreted by the on-field officials as a call for a review.

Should Rishabh Pant be penalised for his argument with the umpire?

Speaking on Cricbuzz, former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist claimed that Pant should be fined for the incident, also saying that after the seeming miscommunication had happened the umpire should have dealt with the situation much quicker.

According to the IPL's Code of Conduct for Players, Pant can be sanctioned under Article 2.8, which relates to showing dissent at an umpire's decision during a match. This will only occur if the umpire reports the incident, and it can be a Level 1 or Level 2 offence meaning Pant could be fined upto 100% of his match fee and/or receive a two-match suspension.

However, it seems unlikely that this will happen. As the case here is most likely one of a genuine miscommunication between the players and umpires, the officials will most probably not report the incident.

In 2022, Pant was fined 100% of his match fee after a match against Rajasthan Royals, admitting to a Level 2 offence under Article 2.7 of the Code of Conduct, relating to 'public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in a match or any player, team official, match official or team participating in any match'.
