Before this breakthrough, Samson had struggled to find consistency at the international level, which led to doubts about his future in the team. Despite his early struggles, including a series of low scores, Samson’s perseverance and self-belief have finally paid off.

He has worked tirelessly to turn his career around, and the support from figures like Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir played an important role in his comeback.

What did Sanju Samson say about the support he received?

Samson admitted that after a few failures, particularly in the Sri Lanka series where he was dismissed for ducks, he began to question his place in the team. But, as he reflected on his journey, he highlighted the guidance he received from both Gambhir and Suryakumar.

According to Samson, after his disappointing scores against Sri Lanka, he received calls from Gambhir and Suryakumar, offering valuable advice.

“During that time, I received a lot of phone calls from Gautam bhai and Surya, telling me what to work on. They said, ‘Your game against spin is looking dicey, so gather the spinners in Kerala and practice on the rough wickets’.”

This advice helped Samson focus on his areas of improvement, especially against spin, which had been a challenge for him. Samson acknowledged that knowing his captain and coach were invested in his development gave him the confidence to push through the tough times.

"If the captain of the Indian team is calling and telling you how to practice after two ducks, then you know that the captain is confident about you and he wants you to do well," he added.

This gesture of support from Suryakumar and Gambhir meant a lot to Samson, and it reaffirmed his belief in himself.
