Liverpool vs. Real Madrid final score: UEFA Champions League result, stats as Kylian Mbappe toils in Reds victory image

Real Madrid's UEFA Champions League defence is looking vulnerable in the extreme following a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at a raucous Anfield.

The reigning European champions were deservedly beaten by Arne Slot's Premier League leaders as Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo each scored in the second half.7

Liverpool led 1-0 when Kylian Mbappe had the chance to equalise from the penalty spot, but his tame effort was comfortably saved by Caoimhin Kelleher, underlining a particularly poor performance from the France star as he failed to get any joy out of Conor Bradley.

Mohamed Salah also missed from 12 yards before Gakpo's header sealed Liverpool's fifth consecutive Champions League win this season, with Slot's team looking certainties to qualify for the Round of 16.

Madrid, meanwhile, sit 24th in the league and are in genuine danger of not going through to the knockouts, while coach Carlo Ancelotti's position is likely to come under significant scrutiny.

MORE: Liverpool's all-time record vs. Real Madrid makes for bad reading for Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool's first home win over Madrid since 2009 certainly did not look like a guarantee in an even and competitive first half, although the Reds had the best of the chances through Darwin Nunez, who was thwarted by Thibaut Courtois from close range.

The stalemate was broken seven minutes after the restart, Mac Allister combining with Bradley before drilling a precise low finish through a crowded penalty area to send the Kop into raptures.

Madrid's difficulties were compounded when Camavinga went off with an apparent hamstring issue, adding a further name to their worrying injury list.

Mbappe had endured a difficult time against Bradley and Ibrahima Konate, but when Andy Robertson tripped Lucas Vazquez in the box, Madrid's No. 9  had the chance to level the scores and silence the Anfield boos. Instead, his tame effort was well saved by Kelleher.

Salah stunned the home fans when he failed to hit the target with a spot-kick of his own after he had been felled by Ferland Mendy, but Liverpool never looked shaken from their stride.

Once Gakpo had risen unmarked to head in Robertson's cross, the game was over.

Liverpool now look the team to beat both at home and in Europe, and a troubled Manchester City are the next team to visit this weekend. For Madrid and Mbappe, this result cast further doubt over their credentials to win major prizes this season.

Liverpool vs. Real Madrid live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime

Liverpool go top of the standings with five wins from five! It's another brilliant night for Arne Slot's team. For Real Madrid, injury problems and performance difficulties are only getting worse.

90+1 mins: Great save, Courtois! Diaz runs through on goal on the break, but Courtois anticipates the finish and sticks out an arm to make the block from close range.

88 mins: Bradley goes off after feeling discomfort in his hamstring, which doesn't seem surprising given how much ground he's covered today. Joe Gomez is on.

85 mins: Liverpool are enjoying themselves now, while Madrid look like a team that want to hear the final whistle. This has been chastening for Los Blancos, in spite of the relatively low scoreline.

79 mins: Modric receives a warm round of applause as he is replaced by Endrick. The veteran has played superbly tonight, in spite of the score.

76 mins: GOAL! LIVERPOOL GET THEIR SECOND! Substitute Cody Gakpo is completely unmarked as he jumps to head in Robertson's cross. This one is done.

75 mins: Liverpool are pressing for a second here. Madrid might have been given a lifeline by Salah's miss, but they don't look like scoring right now. The home side are in control.

70 mins: SALAH MISSES! Goodness me! Courtois dives the wrong way, but Salah blasts his shot wide, the ball clipping the left-hand post on its way.

69 mins: PENALTY LIVERPOOL! Salah twists past Mendy and the full-back trips him over. It's a clear spot-kick. And it all came after Mbappe lost a duel to Bradley again.

66 mins: Bellingham gives up the ball and concedes a free-kick close to the Madrid box. Like Mbappe, he's really not enjoyed himself here.

61 mins: KELLEHER SAVES! It's a poor effort from Mbappe, and Liverpool's keeper dives to his left to parry the ball away. That could be a huge moment in this game — and maybe Madrid's Champions League campaign.

60 mins: PENALTY REAL MADRID! Substitute Lucas Vazquez is clipped by Robertson and referee Francois Letexier points to the spot. There wasn't a huge amount of contact, but that was not a decision that VAR would overturn. Mbappe will take it...

54 mins: Wide from Mac Allister this time! He curls inches past the right-hand post after another good move. Madrid are rocking here — and Camavinga has just pulled up with an apparent hamstring issue. They're down to the bare bones now.

52 mins: GOAL! LIVERPOOL LEAD AT ANFIELD! Mac Allister plays a one-two with Bradley and drills a low shot beyond the reach of Courtois and into the net. It's a fine goal from Liverpool, and no more than they deserve. Madrid are in trouble here.

Kickoff: Second half

No changes at the break. Let's see if someone can find a breakthrough...

Halftime

Stalemate at the break. Liverpool have had the best chances, but Real Madrid could have done more with some counters. The star men of Mbappe and Salah have been on the fringes.

43 mins: Robertson makes a really good interception, then gives away the ball cheaply and concedes a corner. Modric's delivery is cleared.

38 mins: Mbappe's pass on the edge of the Liverpool box is intercepted, and he doesn't track back as Liverpool break and create a chance for Jones. It's not been his night so far.

33 mins: Anfield comes to life after Conor Bradley makes a crunching tackle on Mbappe, and Nunez glances a tricky header inches wide at the other end. Liverpool are back in the ascendancy, although Madrid look a real danger on the break.

30 mins: Bit of a stalemate as we reach the half-hour point. These two are cancelling each other out at the moment.

23 mins: Big save from Courtois! It's all a bit scrappy in the Madrid box, the ball bounces over Asencio and drops to Nunez six yards out, but Courtois is off his line quickly to block the attempt.

22 mins: Foolish from Nunez, who pulls Eduardo Camavinga to ground on the edge of the box. Madrid have settled here and begun using the ball nicely, but chances have been non-existent until now. Guler will try his luck from this free-kick... but it's too high.

18 mins: Bellingham and Mbappe, both once linked with moves to Liverpool, are being booed whenever they get the ball. The jeers are louder this time after the latter goes to ground following a shoulder-charge by Van Dijk. Ryan Gravenberch takes exception to the decision, and is booked for arguing.

12 mins: Liverpool players surround the referee after Nunez drops to the ground holding his face. Replays show he had a tussle with Asencio, who shoved him in the chest, prompting Nunez to react in a rather embarrassing way. Both players go into the book.

7 mins: A nervy moment at the back as Virgil van Dijk carelessly gives the ball away in his own half, but Andy Robertson is covering. The Liverpool captain won't want to do that again.

5 mins: So nearly a Liverpool goal! Mohamed Salah sends Darwin Nunez through on the break. His low shot is well saved by Thibaut Courtois, but the loose ball hits Raul Asencio and almost crosses the line. The younger defender reacts just in time to clear it away.

2 mins: An interesting note from the off: Brahim Diaz looks to be starting at centre-forward, with Arda Guler on the right and Mbappe on the left. Bellingham is on the left of a midfield three.

Kickoff: First half

We're off!

10 mins before kickoff: Not long to go now...

45 mins before kickoff: This could be a huge game for Bellingham. He spoke beforehand of feeling like he was made a "scapegoat" for some of England's unconvincing performances at Euro 2024, and his form for Madrid this season has been patchy at best. Yet tonight, he will have more of the role in which he thrived for his club in 2023/24, with Mbappe on the left and no obvious centre-forward ahead of him.

"It's been hard because the results haven't been as good as last year and Jude Bellingham's numbers haven't either," former Madrid and Liverpool winger Steve McManaman said on TNT Sports. "But you can't expect them to because he hasn't been playing the same position. I think his overall performances have been excellent."

1 hour 10 mins before kickoff: Madrid were quick with their team news (as usual), and there are some interesting choices. It looks like more of a switch back to the system that worked so well last season, with Jude Bellingham as a false 9 and Kylian Mbappe operating off the left in the absence of the injured Vinicius Junior. There's a start for youngsters Arda Guler and Raul Asencio.

1 hour 30 mins before kickoff: The Anfield pitch is looking exemplary for this one, which is no mean feat given the recent torrential rain over much of the UK.

2 hours before kickoff: This has the hallmarks of being one of the best games of this league phase — and it's fair to say the pressure is on the visitors. Much may depend on the performance of Jude Bellingham as he returns to English shores...

Liverpool vs. Real Madrid lineups, team news

This game comes too soon for Trent Alexander-Arnold to start, although he is at least fit for the bench.

In a twist, Alexander-Arnold misses out against the team rumoured to be chasing him as part of a 2025 free transfer, with Slot preferring to keep him for Liverpool's weekend league clash with Manchester City.

Conor Bradley continues in Alexander-Arnold's place at right-back, with Caoimhin Kelleher covering for injured No.1 Alisson BeckerAlexis Mac Alister starts after coming off the bench in the 3-2 win over Southampton.

Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa remain sidelined.

Liverpool's injury issues pale in comparison to the list of absentees for Real Madrid with Brazilian talisman Vinicius Junior ruled out. Ancelotti confirmed the shock update ahead of the flight to Liverpool with the 24-year-old suffering a hamstring injury against Leganes.

Fellow Brazilian Rodrygo Goes has not recovered from a muscle injury in time with Aurelien Tchouameni still sidelined with a sprained ankle.

Federico Valverde remains at right-back for this one, with Arda Guler a surprise choice in midfield. It looks like Jude Bellingham will operate as a false 9, much as he did last season, with Kylian Mbappe starting in Vinicius' usual role on the left.

There is a Champions League debut for Raul Asencio at center-back.

Real Madrid (4-3-3, right to left): Courtois (GK) — Valverde, Asencio, Rudiger, Mendy — Arda Guler, Camavinga, Modric — Brahim Diaz, Bellingham, Mbappe
